Well the Windows Media tool upgraded my Windows 10 and it asked me what I wanted to keep. I thought I answered that question correctly but it seems the new version ******* me but good. Problems are the screen resolution isn't correct and I can't change it like I could before. Next, it failed to load my NVIDIA G-FORCE VIDEO DRIVER. I also have a second monitor and now it isn't recognized for some reason or another. I also find I have no control to use the second monitor as I did before. I just love Microsoft????? I tried to manually reload my NVIDIA Graphics Driver but it wouldn't. Said not compatible??? Please help me get rid of this update and go back to the old Windows 10.

I'm sorry to hear about your problems. The installation media on a USB-stick has always worked for me and the friends that I have helped. Some of them were in deep trouble but it worked.

My computer speaks Swedish so, this might not be the exact wording in English but under Settings > Updates and Security > Recovery it should be possible to go back to the previous version. For that to be possible, there must be a folder named "windows.old" in the root of the system partition. It gets created during the upgrade and stays there for a couple of weeks but will eventually be deleted by the OS.

I went through the Recovery process and am back to a working Windows 10. Obviously, the new build doesn't like my graphics card or "sticky notes" app as well as not recognizing a second monitor, although that is probably due to the graphics card problem. Now back to one of my original problems. How do I eliminate the Windows 1703 Update from continually trying to update when it fails every time?

    Good to hear!

As I understand it, you are now running version 1703 and don't want Windows 10 to be upgraded to version 1709, right?

This is not that easily done, if at all possible. It differs between W10 Home and W10 Professional. You haven't filled in your system details, which are you running?

I went google on block windows 10 version upgrade and found several leads but it seems like you can only delay the upgrade for a period of time. My thought is to, if possible, delay 1709 until 1803 (?) has been released and test your luck with that one. If you haven't already done it, click the link and browse the results!

No, my current system configuration is Windows 10 Home; Version 10.0.10586. It is 1703 that keeps failing to install.

Hmmm ... o_O ... then I've misunderstood. The Media Creation Tool downloaded version 1709 which means that installing version 1703 via Windows Update fails and installing version 1709 from a USB-stick fails.

Can you confirm that the "Media Creation Tool way" was a two step operation? First, have the tool create the installation media on a USB-stick and next, run the setup from the USB-stick. If so, not much hope of a successful upgrade to a future version (1803?) then.

I'm running out of ideas but I would go google on the specific computer model and search for a solution to the "upgrade failure to Windows 10 version 1703" (or version 1709 as it seems).

By the way, the thread title says "fall update". 1703 is Creators Update (the one you have problems with), 1709 is Creators Fall Update (the one I've been trying to help you with). Maybe you should edit the thread title?

I also realize that I have discussed two issues with two members, joe645 (who started the thread) and arthur277 (who jumped in with a comment and a different question). It's always recommended to start a separate thread for a different question. If not, a risk for confusion is obvious!

Sorry for the confusion (although still am) I have had some 25 tries of Update 1703 only to fail each time and it always says that I need to update my Windows 10 before it can load. I don't recall ever seeing a 1709 Update and there isn't one in my history. The only other update in history is a few (verison 1511) updates that successfully installed. Someone suggested I download the Windows Media Tool which I did and it installed and that's when my problems started causing me to go back to where I am now. So with that were do I go from here?

That was my suggestion. Did you disconnect from the internet while running the setup from the USB-stick?

I never loaded the Windows Media Tool Prg to a USB. It loaded directly to hard drive. That 1703 file is now trying to install about every 2 hours of so.

The download of the Media Creation Tool certainly ended up on the HDD but you should not have chosen the "upgrade this PC" option. That probably was no different from letting Windows Update download and install the upgrade, which has failed on your system. You should have run the tool to create the installation media on a USB-stick, which includes more options (drivers and such) than a direct download for a specific system and next, have run the setup from the USB-stick, disconnected from the internet.

I'm sorry but since you don't follow instructions ... ... you're on your own!

Well not following instructions is necessarily a capital crime. So while on my own, I contacted Microsoft Support and they remotely fixed whatever the problem was. Windows 1709 is now loaded and installed. I had to update my NVIDIA drivers as well as a couple of other apps. As for me this thread is closed. Thank you all.

I intended to "sit on my hands" but I have to make a final short comment. If a course of action is suggested and failure is reported back, then I have to assume that the suggested course of action has been followed but failed. In this case, other steps had been taken, steps that resulted in failure and left me in the dark. I simply didn't want to play that "game".

No matter what ... ;) ... thanks for reporting back your success!
