I have just installed a new version of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on an Acer 5742ZG to which I have installed an SSD and it is activated. One of the first things that I did was install SP1 and the Update History shows that it installed correctly.

However it does not show up when I look at System Information and Windows Update keeps trying to install it again but fails every time with the error message 'Error 0x80070002'. In the past I have found that a new installation of Windows 7 requires almost 200 updates, but this installation says that the OS is up to date, and there are only about 50 updates.

How can I get the update recognised in System Information and I also cannot find the option "Do not remind me of this again" for updates.

I have tried both methods. The first install was using a 930MB file downloaded some time ago from support.microsoft.com and the other attempts have been via Windows Update with the program downloading SP1. I am horrified to see that the 64bit version for download is 7.4GB!

Please note that Update History seems to be okay with the downloaded version and records the installation as Successful.

I have just downloaded another copy of KB976932 from the link you sent me, Tony T, and will look to see if it will install over the previous copy. Manually!

I have tried to install this latest copy of KB976932 but am told that the installation cannot continue as essential updates are not installed.

This is really helpful and typical of Microsoft error messages. It is real dog in the manager attitude: "We know what is missing but we are not going to tell you or help you to get these items."

    PerhapsI need to uninstall SP1?

So there are 43 updates installed, but SP976932 does not show up although the installation appears twice as successful followed by 10 instances of it being unsuccessful.

Cany ANYONE tell me what the problem is?

    Hi arthur277.

You will need to create a Windows 7 DVD to reinstall the Windows 7 OS. You can find Windows 7 SP1 ISO files here, Windows 7 SP1 ISO Image Downloads.

You will need to download a torrent client to download the Windows 7 ISO image. Download the portable version of uTorrent and run the program.

After the program opens, click on the add link button and paste the download link of the Windows 7 ISO file that matches the version of Windows 7 that you have installed.

In your case since you have Windows 7 Home Premium you would select the en windows 7 home premium with sp1 x64 dvd 620851.iso link.

Once you have downloaded the ISO file you want, download and run the portable version of Active ISO Burner and burn the Windows 7 ISO file to a DVD.

After you have created your Windows 7 DVD follow the instructions from here to perform a clean installation of Windows 7, How to Do a Clean Installation with Windows 7.

After you perform a clean install with the integrated Windows 7 SP1 ISO image follow the instructions from this link to install the convenience rollup package, How to Update Windows 7 All at Once with Microsoft’s Convenience Rollup.

Make sure you install all the drivers for your hardware devices as well.

Many thanks for your suggestions Evan Omo. I have the laptop working okay and I have installed the drivers for the laptop from the Acer website but although I have tried both of the suggested drivers, neither will make the touchpad work although it was previously working so I am sure that the drivers listed for this model are not correct.

I have managed to access the Recovery sector on the original HDD but this is in French (??) and even when all the recovery actions have been completed the laptop does not work correctly and it keeps losing the boot info after OS updates and won't boot. I think frankly that I will put this laptop on ebay and let someone else tear their hair out. The customer does not want it and says she will buy a new one. It is a number of years old anyway.

I will mark this as solved although I am giving it up!

Thanks for letting me know even though the user will not be using the laptop anyway. Since you marked this thread as Resolved, we will leave it at that.
