Thanks Christer. I may give it a go this evening.

Just for your information, I create a Macrium Reflect image on an external hard drive before I try each upgrade. I know it works because I bought a new hard drive a week or so ago and installed it in the computer and used the Macrium recovery media and it created everything exactly as it was on the original hard drive.

Okey, I understand. I myself use Norton Ghost or TeraByte Image for Linux and I do it the old way, of a system that has not been booted.

If you created the images of a used system, it will be put back to square one by the reset.

And disconnect ALL peripherals. Printers, card readers, USB drives, external and internal drives. Just have your OS drive on it's own. (bare bones).
Remember, any changes you make should be followed by a Shut down and Reboot to ensure the changes take affect. Take your time and don't shortcut anything.
If this fails, there has to be something wrong with the comp.

Just to clarify, by "it" I refer to the system which will be reset to "factory fresh". You should scrap the old images and create a new one when the computer works without problems.

I like your method to create an image prior to each change. I myself do that on my DeskTop (Windows 7) and a change in my book is a new round of updates to Windows. That means a new image each month.

On my LapTop (Windows 10) I have no control over the updates and have a basic image (the whole drive) from "untouched" and a second image (system partition only) from "installed and configured to my liking". If anything should happen (and it has) I restore the second image and immediately apply the most recent upgrade to get to the latest version. Up and running in an hour or two ... ... !

Thanks to all who responded. I still have been unable to upgrade the original install of Windows 10 (1511) to either the Anniversary Edition (1607) or the Creator Edition (1703). However, the Windows Update function appears to be working OK. It did install a Windows (not Defender) update on August 3.

The last measure I have tried was to find the Anniversary Edition upgrade and try to install it manually over the original. However, when I tried to find the Anniversary Edition, all links took me to the Creator Edition which I have tried to install a dozen times. I would assume that the Creator Edition includes the Anniversary upgrade as well.

The computer is working fine otherwise so I think I will mark this one "Resolved" for now. I had been considering getting my wife a new computer with SSD and HD so I may go ahead with that. Or I may try Christer's suggestion for Windows 10 Recovery Options #2. Whatever I do, I will report back with an update.
