Microsoft has tried I think twice now, to force this update to my PC, each time it's failed. The last time I was watching Netflix on my PC and got a popup telling me about this awesome update and did I want to restart now? I selected to restart at midnight. When I got up at 6am, my computer was completely frozen, monitor black, no hard drive light, so I pressed the power button and it restarted at 75%. At around 86% it completed froze at that screen. I restarted again and this time reverted to the previous version. I use Windows Update Mini Tool so updates are disable since I always have issues but apparently this is so awesome it overrides it. When I went to check what version update it was, I see it's downloading again. Can I stop this update?

Not any more. You can delay it but not avoid it. MS has started offering to all Win10 users now.

So I periodically just have to go several hours without my computer until the update realizes it can't install? This is asinine! Well, hopefully my wife will soon start working again, we can bank some money and I can get a new PC and it will become a moot point.

A new PC is not going to solve anything. If an update is not installing, it means something wrong with Windows & not PC. These things tend to happen on & off, if we start buying new PC for every such incident then we may have to replace every year.

So, before I did a clean reboot or tried anything, I ran the microsoft windows update repair tool. After that I noticed I got the message about restarting the computer to complete updates when I clicked on the power button. I gritted my teeth and rebooted. This time it only took a second and nothing seemed to happen, I didn't get any messages about windows updating when I rebooted, it just started normally. So I tried everything suggested in the "repairing Windows 10 thread". My PC is about 6 years old and thought there might be some issues, but now when I look it in update history it says no updates have been installed yet. I looked in the windows update mini tool and that tells me the last update installed is 1607. I had set 1703 as hidden but it doesn't show at all now, it seems to be completely gone.

I have stopped using Windows Mini Update tool as Win10 update seem to be much better than previous versions & throwing one more app in the mix only increases the problem. Let Win10 update do it work.

Can I safely just delete this file and Windows Update will go back to normal? I didn't see any uninstall option for it. I set Windows Update (in the minitool) from disabled to automatic so shouldn't that enable Windows to update as usual or will I need to delete WUMT?

Set Windows Update to Automatic in WUMT & check in settings if it indeed has been set so. You can just remove the WUMT directory.

Okay I've done that. It still shows that no updates have been installed but my version of Windows says it's 1607 build 14393.1480

Have you carried out any clean up? Driver/Software updates? Cleared Temp Files? Run MBAM or Ccleaner?
Take the time to ensure that WU will work OK. What AV are you using?

I occasionally run MBAM. Haven't for a couple months, so running it now. I have Bitdefender as my AV. Never used Ccleaner. I periodically clean my temp folder. I've tried finding drivers but I know for my graphics chip (intel HD2000) they don't have one for Win10 and when I've looked for other intel drivers I never know which ones to get. I use the intel update utility but it always shows me a whole bunch of different ones instead of just the specific one I need and I'm afraid of installing an incorrect motherboard or bios update.

Windows Update track changes only which it has made. If you install any updates outside it,they won't appear here. Don't worry everything is ok.

If you have trouble with MS updates, it is recommended to Disable/uninstall 3rd. party AV while the update is taking place. Defender will protect your system during this period and you can enable your 3rd. party AV when everything has been installed and setup.

Okay, I saw when I went to put my computer to sleep last night that there was an update ready to install. I turned off my AV and rebooted. It took about 5 minutes and seemed to go okay. I checked in updates and it showed it was downloading an update so no idea what the first update was. The whole process of downloading and installing took about 45 minutes. I disabled my AV again (I had turned it on when I thought update was done) and rebooted. Same problem as before. After about half an hour it was only about 2% done and as it was pretty late, I went to bed. Woke up to a black monitor, hard drive light was on, steady light, mouse and keyboard were not doing anything. I turned the computer off and when I started again it was about 75% done. It got to about 87% before it completely froze. No hard drive activity, pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del does nothing. I turn the computer off and on again and it reverts to previous version. I ran the Microsoft Windows Update repair tool, Win 10 repair tools in the "repairing Windows 10" thread and disabled my AV. My PC just does not want this update.

I would suggest at this point that you uninstall your Bitdefender AV completely.
I have had no problems updating drivers using Windows as in Device Manager. W10 is far superior to previous Windows versions. W10 has a far bigger collection of approved drivers which will get your system running OK.
I have built 4 comps over the last 3 years - all with new parts - and in each case the motherboards drivers were installed by W10 during OS install.
As I said previously, uninstall your 3rd. party AV completely from your comp and let it run with Windows Defender AV. It should install all updates and then you can re-install your 3rd. party AV. Make sure you do not have any peripherals plugged in and if possible just use 1 (one) HDD (bare bones PC) which will obviate any extraneous problems.

So I now have another issue. I went to restart my computer; not for any updates or anything, I periodically restart it as I use it for gaming quite a bit, at any rate this time it completely froze. Never happened before. I held down the power button and it started again but froze once more. I pulled the power cord out, thinking it got caught in a restart loop or something, but as soon as I plugged it back in, it tried rebooting. This time it offered me some options about repairing Windows. At this point, I decided to turn the computer off and try turning it on again but the freezing happened again. After a time I was offered the repair options once more and I decided to reinstall Windows, keeping personal files. I no longer have Bitdefender installed and as it was a clean install of Windows, I tried the Windows update but once again it failed. I have windows Defender running now.

Hi The WobMob. At this point try performing a system refresh on your system which will repair the Operating System and see if that allows you to upgrade to build 1703.

How do I go about this? I've reinstalled Windows 10 a short time ago (after my computer froze upon rebooting), opting to keep my personal files. I recently tried to update to 1703 before reinstalling Bitdefender but had the original issue so I don't think it was my 3rd party AV. Also tried doing a clean boot into Windows but this didn't help either.
