I and many people use SyncBack.
I just use it to backup all the office computers to a file server... It's set to only copy over new or updated files.... Am pretty sure it can and will "sync" two computers so that both have the same files.

I tried using X copy. The first folder worked fine. The second folder failed to copy with error message of "invalid number of parameters." Apparently it could not handle a folder named "0 My Help Docs"

Do you think SyncBack would work like the Windows Briefcase, that is:

    1. Copy files to a jump drive from a desktop computer.
    2. Make changes to the files on the jump drive, using any remote computer
    3. Syncronize the jump drive with the desktop computer, to put the changed files back on the desktop in their original location.

Yes...it probably will do that... It would be two separate processes.

And it has a built in scheduler that ties into Windows Task Scheduler.

    Example:
8am - copy files to jump drive
9am - copy files back to desktop

Briefcase was ok when internet access was limited & speeds slow. Now there is no need for it. Use Dropbox or OneDrive or any such cloud storage. They would work across all your devices without any manual intervention.

Go back to my second posting on the first page of this thread. The situation I face frequently is the lack of Internet access, or interrupted access when I need to do urgent work. Sometimes I cannot even get a dependable WiFi hotspot for lack of cellular coverage (and I use Verizon, which claims to have the best coverage). You may be right for most people, in most situations, but to say their is "no need for it" is just not true.

In India, internet access is behind most of the world but it works even here. I use Dropbox & it keeps my laptop/desktop/phone in perfect sync even without internet. As soon as you get internet, it syncs the files automatically.

If you use their client and sync your files before going out, there won't be a problem in accessing the files as these are stored locally and you can work on them without internet. Internet is required only to sync the files.

Okay, we're more on the same page than I thought; my mistake. Yes, I work offline when away from the Internet.

I do most of my work from my desktop at home, with reliable Internet. But when I'm away from home, on vacation, driving, or wherever Internet is unreliable, up to now I've put the needed files on a jump drive inside of the Windows Briefcase. I worked remotely off line on the Briefcase. After I get back, I'd update (replicate) the Briefcase to the numerous storage locations on my desktop computer where the files normally reside.

My problem is that Microsoft just turned off the Briefcase function, so I'm looking for an alternative.

The files I brought with me on the Briefcase were in many locations on my desktop. Neither my jump drive (at 32 GB), nor my laptop's available hard drive space (about 40GB) have the capacity to carry all the data files that are on my desktop. So I only bring along those that I would need "on the road."

I'm looking for a solution that when I synchronize, the subset of files that I put on a jump drive, or in the available space on the laptop, need to retain the folder and location structure that was on the desktop. The Xcopy solution that was recommended hear earlier could be made to work, but it requres a separate command line for each folder I replicate, and I would have lots of command lines. And any time I added a file to the jump drive or laptop from a different folder, I'd need to add another command line to the bat files.

I'm not using cloud storage (except for minimal backup of my phone contacts) and I do my computer backups locally to a USB hard drive. I see no need to start using cloud storage to solve this problem. I should be able to move the files using a LAN cable to the hard drive of the laptop, but right now I only have a Windows Homegroup LAN, and I'm not sure that will handle this type of transfer. Since I'm in a hurry, I'm looking to use the jump drive to get going and work on the LAN approach later.

Several products have been suggested to do the synchronization of files to either a jump drive or to the hard drive of the laptop: Syncback, Allway Sync, and Free File Sync. The last one seems to have some limitations for this purpose, so I'm focused on the first two. I've tried to contact those two companies to confirm that their product can replace the functionality of the Windows Briefcase. Neither has responded by phone, email, or report forum. I'd like to get a little confidence in the product before I dive into setting one or the other up.

How are you syncing the files from Dropbox to your laptop? Before I retired from Cat, they synced our data files from the LAN servers to and from our laptops. We did that as a command just before we undocked from the network. It was seamless.

Just install Dropbox client on all your devices & login with the same user name in all the devices. From then on, whatever changes you make on one device would be carried over to all your devices.

Dropbox specifically is not going to be my solution. I'm sure lots of people have had good experience with Dropbox. I did not. A friend suggested I install it to help her consolidate photos from several people. As soon as I installed Dropbox, squirrelly things started happening on my computer. It behaved as if I had installed a virus. I uninstalled it and the problems went way. That is the end of that story.

The Caterpillar solution was not Dropbox. I don't know what it was, but we could select folders that we wanted to replicate on the laptop, and leave others off. And it wasn't doing things in the background, rather it would do the replication on command.

You answered my question (thank you) enough to let me know Dropbox isn't my answer.

Dropbox is meant for storing your data in the could so that it's safe & could be accessed online from any device/any where. It's not meant to consolidate things from different people so it would fail.

    What problems ?

Anyway, we are a long way off from the original thread.

Terry, I suggest that you open a new thread in appropriate forum to get more information/solutions.

Regarding the problem of loss of Windows Briefcase, I've found a reasonable solution. SyncBack, sold by 2BrightSparks software, has a product that, after getting used-to, will provide the same function as Windows Briefcase. It takes more understanding to use, but once you have that understanding, it is faster and less buggy to run than Windows Briefcase. There are multiple versions of the software ("Lite", "SE", and "PRO"), and so far I'm working okay with SyncBackLite. Right now it costs $19.95.
