Wife's computer - W 10 Pro Ver. 1511 - same specs as mine except I have Anniversary Edition (1607) installed.

I opted to decline upgrades on her machine when the Anniversary Edition came out and I just discovered that I forgot to upgrade later as I had planned. I am unsure how to proceed to bring her machine up to date now.

My initial thought was to uncheck the box that declines the upgrades and let the automatic update process take over and handle the upgrade. My second thought was to manually download and install the upgrade. I know that Creator Update is lurking (haven't installed it on my machine yet) and don't know how/if that impacts my current situation.

One thing I have noted that might compound my problem is that no Windows security updates have been installed since January of this year. When I check on Update History, the message is "No updates have been installed". However, when I click on "Uninstall Updates" I get a full listing of installed updates - the most recent being January 10, 2017. When I check for updates, it searches for a long time and then displays a message:

Then it displays an error code (0x800705b4. Search of the error code gave recommendations to run SFC which I did. Message was that "...found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them..." Details were in a CBS log file which I looked at but couldn't decipher. Restarted computer and searched for updates with same results.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

Robert you are behind the times. This HP Notebook is running Version 1703 and OS Build 15063.483 and without any problems. All installed on Auto Update. ;)
If you open Settings > Update and Security > click on Looking for info on the latest updates?
This will take you to MS where I'm sure you will be able find/locate what you want/need.
You will see that downloading the latest update will bring you ALL in one. Also, I'm pretty sure that if you stop auto updating - it will still install Defender security patches - if you are using MS W10 AV. You cannot stop MS updates with W10 Home, only Pro and above and then only for 35 days if I remember correctly.
Always ensure that your comps drivers and software have the latest versions installed. Run MBAM or Ccleaner and clear Temp Files before restarting Updates or Manually installing them.

I suggest you start by running Microsoft's Windows Update Troubleshooter. Download the file, then run it and follow the prompts.

I ran the WUT twice and both times it ended giving me a message that some problems were found and fixed. However, when I run the update, I still get the same information as before - no updates have been installed but when I select "Uninstall updates" I see 48 updates up to Jan 2017. An Adobe Acrobat update did install on 7/11/17 but no Microsoft since Jan 2017.

I unchecked the "Defer Upgrades" option yesterday but that doesn't seem to have any effect. Should I go ahead and try manually downloading and installing the Anniversary Update - or should I skip it and go with the Creator Update? Or is there something else I should try?

It's very confusing. I have 5 physical computers & 5 virtual ones running Win10. I updated 2 of my physical computers manually by downloading & installing the Anniversary edition. Out of the others, only one physical machine received the update the rest did not.

Is there any method to this madness ?

KB4025342 is the latest MS W10 update. If you download and install it you will be right up to date. This would then show Version 1703 and OS build 15063.483.
My "Insider Preview" W10 comp just received the latest build #16241 yesterday (15/07/2017) and it took 4½ hours to complete the download and install. This would be the longest time I've noticed, but I put it down to plenty of traffic on the Internet.
School holidays and a Saturday - shopping traffic.

Update - Still no luck getting the Windows Updater to work. I plan to manually install the Creator edition in the next day or so pending a response to another thread I created in Hardware.

I had the same error code and update problem with a family members computer recently. I unclicked "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows". You find this in Update-Advance options.

CaneMan - thanks for the input. I had already unchecked the "...other Microsoft..." and that didn't do the trick.

Update - Last evening I started installation of the Creator Update. It started the upgrade installation and it appeared for a couple of hours that it was installing. About the time I thought it should be finishing, got a black screen with the mouse pointer and no action. I left it overnight thinking it might be doing more in the background - no such luck. This morning I restarted it and it reverted back to the previous state before I started the upgrade. So I was back to square 1 - getting the same message when I searched for updates.

Today, I started manually installing missing updates as identified by Belarc Advisor. After installing KB4025344 - fairly significant size package - I tried the "Check for Updates" button and the update feature seemed to start working OK. It found and installed almost 20 updates for the 1511 version. I no longer get the error message after searching for updates. In fact, it found the Creator upgrade and prompted me to begin installing but I deferred and will do it this evening. Will report back in the morning but I am encouraged now.

Added note - Don't know if KB4025344 did the trick because it seems to deal with IE 11 which I don't use.

I have tried to manually install the Creator Update over the past couple of days with no luck. The upgrade starts as it should and progresses through several restarts and after an hour or so it stops. Text on screen says "Working on Updates 89%. Don't turn off .....". Then the screen goes dark. I have left it running at that point overnight twice and hit the restart button and it would start booting. However the message at the bottom of the screen told me it was "...restoring to the previous version...". And I was back where I started.

However, this morning I got the dialog box at start up that told me that the Creators Version was ready to be installed but needed to do some background work. I told it to do the background work and then tell me when it was ready to install. So I am awaiting that message.

Over the past several days I have made several attempts to install the Creator Update using the Windows 10 Update Assistant. All had the same result - process starts normally and proceeds for an hour or so and in the "installing" stage, after the "restart" gets to 80 - 90% complete and then stops and the screen goes black. I have to manually restart and each time, during the boot up, it restores to the previous version. Last evening, based on a suggestion I found on the Microsoft website, I did a clean boot and then tried the upgrade with the same results.

Not quite sure what to do at this point. Any other suggestions?

In the past, I have updated a few troublesome computers using a USB flash drive, with the installation media created by the Media Creation Tool. Follow the directions to "create Windows 10 installation media". When running the tool, you have to be connected to the internet but when done, disconnect and start the update from within Windows by running setup.exe from the flash drive. When asked, tell it to keep your programs, applications and personal files. (Personally, I always backup my documents, pictures and other personal files because you never know.) Tell it to not download further updates. When the installation finishes (hopefully), reconnect to the internet and check for updates. There will be updates since the Creators Update is a few months old by now.

I have been trying to use the Media Creation Tool but haven't had any luck and am a bit confused. When I go to Christer's link, I have an option to 1)Upgrade this PC or 2)Create media to use on another PC. When I select option 1 it takes me through the process I have described above - stops at 89%. I haven't tried option 2 as I'm not wanting to update "another" PC - I want to update the one I am using.

The last time I tried the update I did get an error message:
I searched that error and it indicated that there may be driver problems. I guess my next step is to find out which driver/s are bad and update them. Not quite sure how to approach that but will try.

But if there's no support it clearly says that this configuration is no longer supported or something to this effect. It doesn't throws up indecipherable errors.

You can use it on any computer, even your own ... ;) ... and hopefully it will bypass the checks and steps that Microsoft takes to prepare your computer, the checks and steps that make the upgrade unsuccessful. Try it, it has made my day on several occasions on troublesome computers!

On my own computer, I never even let Microsoft try to upgrade the "automatic way". I always make sure that I create the installation media and run it before Microsoft starts checking and downloading in the background. I have had NO PROBLEMS using "option 2".

I forgot to mention: Disconnect any equipment such as printers, scanners, card readers and whatever you have connected prior to upgrading. Reconnect when done.

And again, when the installation media has been successfully created, before running it, disconnect from the internet. Take care of the updates when the upgrade has been completed.

I used Device Manager to update all drivers. I created a Media Creation Tool (double layer DVD with tool burned on it) to use for the upgrade. I disconnected all devices (printers, scanners, external hard drives) and the internet. Same result as previous tries - gets to about 90% and just stops and screen goes black. I hit restart and it restores to the previous version.

I guess the next step is a reinstall of Windows which I have never done and am not eager to try. I guess the alternative is just to forget it and continue to use the computer without the Creator Update.

Sorry to hear that it didn't work ... ... but it may still be possible to avoid a reinstallation, well, kind of. Within Windows 10 it is possible to reset the computer and I would attempt a reset followed by an upgrade.

Have a look at Recovery options in Windows 10 and option #2 with "keeping your files". Again, the same recommendation to backup your files because you never know.

Do it disconnected from the internet and when the reset has been completed, immediately try to install the "upgrade" from your created installation media.

Finally, reconnect to the internet and let it search for and install the required updates.

Fingers crossed ... ... and hope for success!
