This all started after the big Win 10 update. Prior to that, when I hit the keyboard sleep button or selected power options - sleep, the PC would just do that and stay asleep till I woke it. If I left it running while I walked away, it would time-out and sleep as I would expect.

If I had any apps running, they would come up as normal, even after I would power down when in sleep mode.
The desktop icon layout stayed intact. It was pretty good that way, awake on power up was faster than a cold re-start and my apps were all there ready to go. I would shut down and cold boot weekly to clear anything out.

Not so after the big update. Now if I sleep the PC either by keyboard or power settings, it comes back alive in 10 to 30 seconds. It will not time out, it stays awake. Sometimes the screens (2) will time-out and go black, but the CPU is awake.
If I sleep the PC then power off it gets worse. When powered on, it does a full restart, and I lose all my open apps. But the real problem is my desktop gets blown up. ALL the icons pile up on the left almost every time.

Sometimes when they come up normal, after the screen refreshes, they pile up on the left, about 10 seconds after the desktop lights up.

I normally use small icons. They will sometimes be medium sized.
Sometimes when I click an icon in the pile, they all magically reset to my layout.
Other times, I right click the desktop and in "view" I select small icons and they (sometimes) reset to my layout.

But 2 times out of 5 I have to manually drag each icon back to where it is supposed to be. A real pain.

I have checked every Win setting I could find related to power and desktop, and everything is as it should be, exactly as it was prior to the big update.

    It's become exasperating......

Well, I am glad you are having icon problems as misery loves company. Though I am not having problems going to sleep, every time my computer wakes (or I reboot), all the icons I had on my right (#2/secondary) monitor move over to the left (#1/primary monitor). This has been going on for about 3 weeks now and nothing I have done has fixed it. This includes refreshing the screen, updating graphics drivers, cleaning out the icon cache, changing settings in the Registry and more. I even swapped in a different graphics card going from AMD to NVIDIA to ensure a full driver and graphics settings re-write. Very frustrating.

So I hope someone has a fix and/or Microsoft comes up with one soon.

As for your sleep problem I recommend a cold boot again. To ensure we are on the same page with "cold boot", I mean you shut down Windows, then unplug the computer from the wall for about 15 seconds or so (or flip the master power switch on the back of your power supply, if it has one), then connect power and boot to see what happens.

Bill, thanks for letting me know I am not alone with part of my dilemma.
I did not do quite as much as you did to keep the icons fixed. It HAS to be a Win 10 bug. Nothing else explains it, when that was the only change (update) we made to the PC recently.

As far as sleeping goes, before the update, my normal shutdown when the dinner bell is rung, is I minimize the 3 apps I keep up all the time, press the keyboard sleep button, and when the CPU shuts down (activity LED, HD LED, and fan) I turn off all power to the system by a master panel switch.
Next morning I simply switch power on and in less time than a reboot, I am up and running at where I was last night.

Once a week I shut-down and cold boot.

Now it's a cold boot every time, aside from not staying asleep when I push the sleep button.

Master power switch? Where is this? Typically, when referring to a master power switch, it is the switch located on the back of the computer's power supply. Is that what you mean? Or do you mean your computer is plugged into a power strip and you flip a switch on that? Either way, that would be a "cold" boot.

The switch on the front of the computer is NOT a "master" power switch. It simply puts the computer into a standby mode.

If you are totally killing power to the computer, that may be part of the problem and you may need to look at your hibernate settings.

As for the icons, what I have done as a temporary workaround is to install DesktopOK. I have it set to run when Windows starts. It allows you to save your icon positions, then it resets them for you when you reboot. Sadly, it does NOT automatically reset them when the computer wakes from sleep. But, you can right-click on its System Tray icon and click on "Shutdown Startup" and your icons are repositioned to where you want them. It is certainly not ideal but works for now until Microsoft sorts it out.

Yeah, I think that is where I learned about DesktopOK. I read all the posts in that thread, and I think I read all 50 pages of the other thread mentioned there, trying everything. But nothing stuck. I note I had no problem until about a month ago, with no changes to my system except Windows Update. So I agree with JGB and it seems like Microsoft changed something.

I'm running Version 1703 and OS Build 15063.413 and WU says there are no new updates as of 15 minutes ago. I have not experienced any of the problems you described. Neil.

Are you running with multiple monitors? The icons stay put where I put them on my primary monitor. It is only icons I move to my secondary monitor that don't stick. After every sleep/reboot cycle, they all move to the primary monitor. :(

Sorry for this late reply, was off computer for 2 days.
Bill, I use a power center with all my perifs plugged into it. I use the master swx to cut power to everything, except my wifi router, modem and wifi printer (on 24/7).

Yes I have 2 monitors. The second one has 3 icons on it visible at all times in the upper right corner; calculator, screen-grab and my security camera (Ring). Everything displayed on that screen is size adjusted to keep those icons visible. Really not viable to put them back on the primary and my taskbar is already cramped.

Before the big update, there was not an issue of de-powering the CPU during sleep. It would awake with apps intact when I powered on. Now it cold boots when I power on.
Not only that, and aside from scrambled icons, now it won't sleep at all after timeouts. I left it on desktop with no apps running and none minimized for what was to be 15 minutes away.
Turned out to be 8 hours. It was awake all that time, both screens blazing. I checked my power settings, all normal. Screens off after 20 minutes, CPU sleep after 1 hour.

As for scrambled icons, I read through the links mentioned above and checked the theme icon settings. The box was unchecked, and this is something I don't think I even looked at since installing Win 10. So I checked, then unchecked, then OK just to reset it and we shall see. I am a bit reluctant to install DesktopOK due to the problems encountered.

Update... Both the icon scrambling and "insomnia" are erratic. Yesterday well after I "reset" the themed icon box, I pushed the KB sleep button and the PC went to sleep and did not auto wake up at all. About and hour later, still asleep, I hit the spacebar to wake it and it came up normally. There were no apps running or minimized at that time. Icons stayed in place. Like it should.

Then later, I went to shut down for the day. Again, no apps running or minimized. I hit the KB sleep button and it went to sleep. In less than 10 seconds, it came back up, so I shut down and powered off.
This morning I powered up and all the icons stayed in place...... for about 20 seconds, then stacked up on the left. I rt-clicked, view and clicked on small icons, and they all sprung back in place.

Later I left the PC for over 30 min and the 2 screens did not blank off.

MS really ******* up this time.

The site's censor filter did not like it. Some filters go overboard, IMO.

It is easy to blame MS but it should be noted that virtually every single one of the 1.5 billion Windows systems out there (over 400 million W10 systems) becomes a unique system as users setup their own user profiles and desktops, configure networks, install their own security and other apps, and connect/install their own hardware and peripherals from 1000s of different makers. Frankly, I think they do a great job. But if even just .1% have problems, that's still 1.5 million upset users. And 1.5 million upset users can make a lot of noise.

I note on my other computer, which also runs 64-bit W10 Pro with two monitors, the icons stay put every time.

I've just hooked up my spare monitor to my W10 Pro Insider Preview comp to try and replicate your problem. 2 (two) Monitors (19" Acer and 20" Benq) GeForce GT630 graphics card and put to sleep using KB button - everything goes off and stays off. I can press the spacebar 5 minutes later and it wakes up and all works back as normal with the icons on the Desktop in the same place.
I can only suggest that some software or program in your comps may be the cause of the erratic restarts and cramping icons on the Desktop.
Using sfc /scannow as suggested in some Googles might/should show/fix any problem.

For your test, Neil, make sure you park some of those icons on the second monitor, right-click on the desktop then click "Refresh" to "set" them there, then see what happens after coming out of sleep or after a reboot.

I note the symptoms vary for those affected. For some, it is only when the two monitors use different resolutions (mine are the same). I don't have any problems with my system going to sleep or waking. And the icons on my primary monitor stay put - even those I have parked on the right side of the monitor. For other users, even the primary monitor icons shift to the left of the screen. On my system, only the icons that were on the secondary monitor move to the primary.

And my other computer with dual monitors works fine.

I think part of the problem in resolving this is knowledgeable people like you and those at Microsoft are unable to duplicate the problem at will. :(

Bill, I did the troubleshooting power and it changed from high performance to balanced and reset some timers. My original settings have not been changed since I went from 7 to 10. I had to reset some timers back to what I need them to be, mainly display at 20 minutes and sleep now to 30 minutes. Let's see what happens.

Also I wanted to do the powercfg check but the error msg said I need to do it as an administrator, and that puzzles me, I AM the admin. There are no other users on this PC. My ID is set as admin. Your ref to fixing Win 10 Sleep mode issues has no ref to doing an "elevated cmd prompt".

This am, cold reboot from last nights shut down came up normal icon settings, but 20 seconds after the desktop came up, back to the left. Click on view small icons put them back in place.

This is normal. Right click on the PowerShell icon and select "Run as administrator".
Ummm, yes it does - in bold red letters no less.

There's no need to be reluctant. I am sure retiredlearner will vouch I don't recommend programs that would cause more harm. It is a simple program that saves the icon layout of your icons in a small .ini file stored in a folder on c:\users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\DesktopOK.

Then you just right click on a System Tray Icon and click your layout under Restore, and your icons are back where you want them. If you don't like the program, you just delete that folder. It does not dig itself into deep dark recesses of the kernel.

It is not a fix, just a temporary work around though I learned about it from trusted friends who use it full time.

OK, I pushed the sleep button and 20 seconds later it came awake. I did the Powercfg requests as admin and it reported "legacy kernal caller". Lastwake showed nothing.
See attached screen grab. Does this give any clue to my problem?

I only grabbed the Command window with the needed info in it.
I read through the link and checked every device for power management. All were as I had set them years ago including the CPU BIOS.
All I want is the KB and mouse to wake the PC. All else is off. However as the mouse is too easily disturbed I turned it off this time. I then pushed the KB sleep button with apps on screen and left for an hour.

When I got back the CPU was awake, fans on, but both screens black. However I could not fully wake it with the KB, or even the CPU reset button on the box. I had to cold boot it.
Surprisingly, it came up from a cold boot with apps intact, like it did before the big update.
Powercfg -requests and -lastwake showed nothing. I then reset the mouse back as a wakeup timer. Powercfg -devicequery wake_armed shows only the KB and mouse as armed.

I have to go out so I can't do any testing today.
I will sleep it with apps on screen and check later tonight.
Then I will sleep it and power off for the night and check back tomorrow.
