Now that the new windows 10 is available, is anyone using it and how is it working? Do I have to get it manually or will it come automatically. If automatic, will I get a warning that it's coming. I don't like surprises like that. I have version 1607 now.

You should get a Notification (extreme right Systray) unless you are on Auto update - but there should still be message advising a Restart is required.

It will come in just like normal Windows Updates. So assuming you at least get notified that changes were made, you will know. If like me, your required reboots happen in the middle of the night based on your "active hours" settings, you may not know a reboot happened.

And note most of the changes are "under the hood". You may not notice them at first until you go digging around in the various settings menus. But most noticeable change (for me) was the Windows Defender menu. It is now called Windows Defender Security Center and is much less cluttered and easier to navigate.

I still have the problem with upgrades trying to install and failing, but that's another long story. Most of the time when this happens, it messes up something else. I'm tired of fighting it and am going to re install windows. The downloads seem to prefer a flash drive rather than a disk. Is there a reason for this or just because it's handier? I picked up some new flash drive this morning so I can go either way - have lot of cds and dvds.

Bill, I ran troubleshooter 3 times. It always finds and fixes the same 4 problems. But I still have the same problems as before. My failed installation of KB4019472, which is already installed. Four times today it tried and failed. I tried several tips from MS and each one requires a reboot, and when I reboot, I get another failed install which means that whatever I tried won't work. I have also lost the use of my start button and search feature. I have to use a startup flash drive to start the computer. My Firefox browser is now playing funny games. Computer works great once I get it going. I have found work arounds for most of the problems, but each time I get a failed install, something else turns up. I can't even get to the reset feature because of that crazy undate failure.
Time for a new install. Just hope that doesn't screw up.

Maybe if you tried to manually installed the Creators Update from here, it will correct your problem without having to do a fresh install.

Bill, This is getting so bad it's starting to get funny. I did try a manual update from that site. It downloaded fine and started installing. It got to 88% and quit with an error code. Download did verify. I Googled the code and got about 20 different answers. I went to the MS site and tried their "virtual" assistant - big joke. Every question I put in, I got answers for XP or Vista. Tried to talk to a live person but they wanted me to open a second account with a different e-mail address, which I don't have. When it quit, it locked up most of my machine. Scroll bars didn't work, tabs didn't work. The only thing that did work was close and quit. I'm going to try again after a good nap. I'll keep you posted. Glad I have another machine to use - it's an old XP Pro that works every time.

Lynn, I can sympathize with you completely. My comp (dedicated to W10 Insider Preview) has tried 14 times to install 16199.1000 update!!!! It has caused a corruption in Feedback - won't work. I tried Help - Chat - and got a person by the name of Prahab N who told me to try MS Support. He left me a link to follow and it was a Google - no help at all.
I am trying a few things at the moment. I'm doing a 'clean boot' and I've disconnected ALL peripherals (USB) except KB/Mouse. When comp started, I waited till WU said an update was ready to install and disconnected from the Router. It is currently at 76% install and I'll let you know what happens.

I tried again last night and it didn't work. It starts out good. During the install, it goes from 0 to 76% in 6 minutes. From 76% to 89% it takes 41 minutes. That's when it quit. Using Win L key, I can get to the reset, but it has to restart. When it tried to restart, I get the trying to install the update, which kills the reset process. If I could figure out how to stop the install of the update, It might help. According to my program files, this update is already installed, but it wants to do it again.
Back to step 15, whatever that is.

OK, I,m going to try to install windows 10 again. I found a bunch of junk in the registry and in some old programs. I got rid of them and will try the win install again. I have the ISO file loaded onto a flash drive and started the install. It seemed to get stuck at one point, but has now moved on to the install. I thought I may have had a problem when it got stuck, but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

That was exciting - it got to 30% and failed. Back to the drawing board. Haven't played with this stuff for some time, so I'm getting re-educated. It would help if it told me why it failed, but no such luck. Just quits.

Have you been able to run MBAM/ADWcleaner/CCleaner before you attempt the install? Have you Disabled your AV and disconnected ALL peripherals (USB's) and only have the one HD you want to install to connected?

OK, I disconnected my printer and scanner. I need the mouse and keyboard. I pulled my graphics card and hooked the monitor directly to the motherboard. I disconnected my D drive leaving only my C drive. Even went so far as to install my cloned backup drive. Now if Windows is messed up, the clone would also be messed up. I ran CCleaner and found 2 PUPs which I got rid of. I disabled my virus program. At this point, I had to use my flash start up to get running. Problem not solved.
Last night when I was finished with the computer, I closed everything down except Windows Live Mail - I was expecting a replay. I ate dinner and watched tv, total time about 1 1/2 hours. While getting ready for bed, I came in to turn off the computer and found the update trying to install, which failed. Machine wasn't touched for all that time.
I'm trying to talk to a live English speaking person to explain it, but keep going around in circles on the phone. Never did get anyone. Will try later.
    Off to a ball game.

I would like to try something different this time. My windows version is 1607 build 14393-1066. My latest updates several weeks ago went fine till it got to commulative update KB4019472, which failed. I has tried and failed at least 50 times since them. I just get a "failed" message with no explanation. I downloaded the update from the store and tried a manual install and got a message "this update not appropriate for this machine". I don't know why it keeps trying. I'll never get any more update unless I get this figured out
Does anyone know the number of the update before KB4019472. If I get the original installed, it may solve some of the problems. I have found more problems - none of my shortcut keys work except the lock screen. My network no longer works (internet no problem) , and my start button and search bar don't work Without the start button, there are other things I can't do. All other icons on the taskbar work fine.

Just checked my updates and no cummulative updates for a long time even into last year. But, just a short time ago, I got a new security update and it installed with no problem. I didn't even know it happened until I was looking at the updates.
