Sorry for the long post; but, I posted in another forum and got no help so far and I reposted all details here that I covered in the previous forum.

All of a sudden, Microsoft has started popping up a nag screen when I attempt to reply by e-mail to a Craigslist ad wanting me to set up a Microsoft account. All choices in that nag screen (other than yielding to Microsoft) takes me in a circle back to the nag screen and this nag is TOTALLY BLOCKING my sending e-mail replies to Craigslist ads. The nag is corner-to-corner, blocking all access to all other Windows components The only way I can get it off the screen is through Ctrl+Alt+Del and killing it through Task Manager.

    I don't want a Microsoft Account.

The nag screen is all blue background with white letters and it says:

Switch to a Microsoft Account on this PC
Many apps and services (like this one) rely on a Microsoft account to sync content and settings across devices. We'll help you set up your Microsoft account now.
First, confirm your current local password (we need to know this is you

    Alex
    Current password _____________________

Sign into each app separately instead (not recommended)

and the choices are Next and Cancel

Both choices take me in a circle back to the nag screen.

I have never used Outlook.com, Hotmail, Office 365, OneDrive, Skype, Xbox and always clicked away from anything requiring a Microsoft account. I do not use "other devices" for e-mail so I don't need to "synchronize across devices". I occasionally read e-mail on my phone; but, I have never replied from a phone or even written one from there. Also, I specifically instructed T-mobile to disable texting at the system level on my phone (spammers) so I never receive text and couldn't send one even if I wanted to.

How do I rid myself of this annoyance?

I don't know the answer but would like to ask some questions to see if we can narrow this down a bit.

Have you scanned for malware? Craigslist is not owned by Microsoft so I find this suspicious.

Does it only happen when replying and only to Craigslist? Does your email program work fine otherwise?

Where is this email you are replying to? That is, is it webmail account message you can access from another computer and see if it wants your MS password from there?

    Thanks for the interest.

Have run the free version of Malwarebytes Antimalware and found nothing -- totally clear. Windows automatic update is turned on and is up to date. Am running Windows Defender showing no problems and it scans the entire system every night.

Craigslist is the only place it happens so far; but, I do very little mail other than through Thunderbird 32.1.1.

Go to this site: NIKON D7100 CAMERA BAG!!!!!!!

Click on the Reply button at the top and off center to the left. Then click on the "Reply by e-mail" link. That's when it happens.

I use Thunderbird for all e-mail, ALL e-mail -- and nothing else. I don't often go anywhere where I can try another system and I have no friends who use Thunderbird.

So no one else wastes any more time on this, I'll restore a system image from the tenth of this month.

I have an automated internal backup system that runs on the tenth of each month and saves the last five month's images to a separate internal hard disk. It was working fine two days ago so the drive image from the tenth should fix the problem. I'll start that running when I go to bed.

I don't understand. TB updated itself yesterday. Also, I just now went to their site to download the latest and 52.1.1 is what downloaded.

Anyway, I'll get back here if the system image from the tenth doesn't fix it.

Restoring the drive image from May 10 fixed it.

It's not a waste of time if we learn something new. Re-imaging prevents learning what happened, how to fix it, and then how to prevent recurrence.

I am glad restoring cleared your problem. I am just sorry nothing was learned. :(

Sorry, it wasn't worth any more time, especially when I could get it back to normal in thirty minutes. I had already spent two days on it.

I understand completely. I just hope the problem does not return.
