Resolved Microsoft Edge just flashes on screen

I am running Windows 10 64-bit and today tried to use Edge. It is showing in the Task Bar and in the menus. I have also asked Cortana to open Edge. All that happens is there is a quick flash on the screen and then nothing.

The version: Windows 10 Home 64-bit V1607 Build 14393.693 according to Belarc Advisor. It also tells me that the Version of Edge is V38.14393.0.0.

I have searched the Windows directory and can find application extensions (.dll), .MUI, MANIFEST files etc, so it is obviously there somewhere. However my attempts to download a new copy from Microsoft Support have so far been unsuccessful.

I installed Internet Explorer 11 64-bit and initially I was told that I needed Windows 7 SP1 ??? However AVG seemed to be able to run it so I pinned it to the Task Bar in the hope that I will have at least 2 Browsers, IE and Sea Monkey.

Any ideas about Edge and its failure to run would be appreciated?

 

I would reboot first. If Edge still does not open, I recommend you run system file checker. From an elevated command prompt (Run as administrator), enter: sfc /scannow and press Enter. Note the space before the "/".

 

Why not stop AVG and see if it works with Defender?

 

Thanks for the reply, retiredlearner. I meant that IE ran after it was 'found' by AVG. Strange goings on, not entirely clear what happened there! Anyway IE 11 is now working fine and pinned to the task bar. Still trying the sfc solution, but I have not so far ever had any luck using sfc.

I have located the .exe. file and tried to run sfc /scanfile, sfc /verifyonly and nothing is found and of course scanfile results in the message that sfc cannot fix a protected file.

I also temporarily disabled AVG and the result was the same, a quick flash on the screen then nothing.

Should I uninstall the program and try something else or just forget about Edge and use IE?

 

Your SFC results are good (except for the fact, it did not resolve your problem). I am afraid I am at loss from this point.

Are you just trying to start Edge, or are you clicking on a shortcut and trying to open a specific web page?

 

Thanks for your suggestions, Bill. I am just trying to start Edge. I have tried the desktop shortcut that I put therefrom the SysteAppsd directory, as well as the .exe file in the Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosftEdge directory and the shortcut on the task bar. The result is the same. A quick flash of a blue rectangle then nothing.

I use IE for one specific web site that only works correctly with IE, and Sea Monkey for everything else, so I will just ignore Edge. Maybe a Microsoft Update will fix it, but I am not holding my breath.

 

I found running the apps troubleshooter (Method 1 here) helped several people with Edge problems. It might worth checking out.

I have tried all the suggested methods above, none worked.

I tried to load the directory files from another working copy of Edge, not allowed.

I tried to download a help file from MS Support. Did not do anything.

I tried to get to Chat and ended up with Skype help. Don't need it

Tried to download another copy of Edge and install it - impossible to find a file.

I can't think of a single reason why I should continue to TRY and use Edge.

I have just installed the latest Windows 10 update, to Ver. 1607 Build 14393.1066, and Edge now appears on the screen for about 4 seconds, but before one can enter anything in the dialog or activate any of the other icons, e.g. Home, the program window disappears.

The version of the Edge application file is 11.0.14393.1066. A number of the files in the program's directory and subdirectories have been updated as the dates are today's date, 13 April 2017, but the vast majority are still old versions.

So its back to IE.

 

That is not the latest update. 15063.138 is newer.

Thanks for the suggestion, retiredlearner. I followed your suggestion and printed out the page 'Fixing Microsoft Edge'. very pretty! I followed the instructions and the response was as the example in the instructions. I restarted the laptop as suggested.

Unfortunately, the result was the same.. a quick 3-4 second dialog then poof! - gone.

An interesting suggestion was made to me. I am not signing in to my computer with a 'Microsoft account'. I also noticed that on the signing screen I got on one occasion the option to sign in using my normal login name or Administrator. I tried Administrator, no password required, and was told that the Administrator cannot run Edge. What exactly is Microsoft up to?????

On the PCs where I run Windows 10 and can get it to run, I do sign in with a Microsoft Account. What is the next order that I will have to obey from Microsoft? Do I HAVE TO login with a Microsoft Account or my use will be restricted?

PS I have asked for a 'check for updates', but the Status says my current version is uptodate.

 

I may have missed it, but have you started Edge from the Menu > Microsoft Edge? If it does the same short flash - I am at a loss too. It would indicate that there is something missing to 'fully' open and activate the program.
Logic says Fresh install may be your only answer.
Edge opens every way for me and with all the 'new' goodies, as I have the Creator version installed.

I cannot try through Settings because the program only flashes on the screen for 3-4 seconds.

I have tried using sfc /scannow, but no files are found damaged or repaired.

I have tried using the Power Shell and got a similar result to the example, but Edge results in the same flash.

Perhaps as a Team Member, retired learner, you could flash this one up to the softies at Seattle. Maybe some bright spark there will have the solution. I have searched the forums and tried every solution suggested. I am going to stick with IE and Sea Monkey.

I am NOT going to reload Windows 10 as there is too much hastle in that process just for Edge. Furthermore it is now uptodate, at least the 64bit version is, as Status confirms.

 

I would suggest you wait for and install "Creator update".
If you can't wait - you have the option to do the Manual download. (I have this on 3 comps) The 'newer' version of Edge is great.

I have just been reading a blog from Iobit (You don't like ASC!) and it says that Microsoft have recommended that persons with older computers, like me, should wait until it is offered as some hardware may have problems so I am going to take their advice and wait until it comes to me as an automatic update. I hope when they do it is compatible with my computer. I have taken to doing regular backups of my laptop, a HP G70-120EM running Windows 10 Home 64bit, as I have little faith in the ability of Microsoft to guarantee satisfactory operation with legacy systems. I have been forced to throw out so many peripherals over the years because drivers will no longer work, even in compatibility mode. I am really surprised that this laptop and the dv9000/9500 series will work very well with Windows 10, but my home built PC using an ASROC MoBo won't nor will my HP 6910P.

I tried Windows 10 when it first came out but did not like it and reverted very quickly to Windows 7. However I teach computing to silver surfers and for their benefit and to get around the problems of updating,(What a pigs ear it can be) I recommend that they buy/use/update to Windows 10. In fact I have even convinced myself too, and am now using it on my main computer, this laptop.

I will send them some feedback re Edge.

Can't find Settings, Apps and Features, Make Windows Better!

 

Arthur, in W10 click Start > Settings Icon (Looks like gear wheel) is 2nd. up from Start. When Settings opens on your screen, click on Apps. Apps will open and load all the Apps in use/available in your comp. Look at the RIGHT side of the page - Make Windows Better is the 3rd. down. Just click on Feedback and type your problem/suggestion and submit.
