I have 6 year old Toshiba Satellite A505 laptop with a keyboard problem. The space bar has stopped responding. The space function does work with on screen keyboard and also when using alternate keyboard connected by USB. Does this mean the problem is the keyboard and not software related??

OK, thanks for the feedback. When searching on line for possible explanations, many are related to software conflicts .... but I sort of got the impression that if the space function works using an alternate keyboard via USB, then the problem is almost certainly the keyboard itself. Thanks again !

    Yes.

But before replacing the keyboard (possible but can be technically challenging), I would shutdown the notebook, unplug the charger and remove the battery. Then open the lid and turn the notebook upside down and carefully tap the notebook's edge on a counter to hopefully dislodge any cookie or potato chip crumb. If you have a can of compressed dusting gas, or better yet, a properly equipped air compressor, blast out the dust and dirt while holding the notebook upside down.
