Here we go again. Since the beginning of the year, Vista is taking an exorbitantly long time to update. I have tried all of the fixes posted. Yet Vista still will not update in a timely manner.

It has nothing to do with the amount of updates pending. The last time there was just "one" update pending & that was windows defender. The computer was on for 48 hours & still did not complete the download. To top it off it uses 50 to 55 % of the computers' processing power & 3.37 GB of memory according to task manager. A 64 bit system with 8 GB memory in a laptop.

So far today, it has been running for 18 hours. I started @ 3:00 am on 28 Oct 2016. My other machine has Win 7 & it has the same problems. Usually that one updates within 24 hours. Yet friends with Win 10 do not complain of this problem. This time there are 10 important updates.

The joke of the situation is how quick it nags you to update, but takes forever to complete for the one update, which I do not use anyway.

My only conclusion for the disreputable service that MS offers to the older operating systems is they are trying to force everyone to upgrade. It seems there isn't any money to be made in what they call upgrade (fix issues) & in reality is just a repair in sloppy programming when they hurry the product to market.

Has anyone else gone past the 48 hour mark waiting for an automatic update?

I will report back if and when it finally does update & possibly post a screen shot.

Evan, thanks for the quick reply,

Just so you know the update finally completed @ 4:20 am on 30 Oct 2016..

It took only 25 hrs & 20 minutes, plus to add insult to injury, on the final reboot, it said I had one new update available.

The irony is I do not use windows defender, nor the windows firewall. Yet the security center tells me I am at risk because I do not have their firewall turned on. Even though it recognizes I have a third party AV/firewall with its' own malicious software protection. I also screen the updates
before I download them, due to previous headaches caused by an errant update.

I have tried the quick fix in your post above once before, plus the windows update fix (chkdsk, sfc, etc), just to have this annoying problem return. First I heard about a clean boot.

I will try the quick fix & then the clean boot to see if this will clear up the problem.

Have you tried IE and Windows AV and Firewall as default to download your Windows updates?

    @ retiredlearner, No.

    Thanks for the response.

I do not have any trust for these products. The firewall was breached years ago. Too many false positives on purchased software and IE is bloated, slow, plus allowing too many pop-ups and/or banners thru.

Progress so far on the update fix is stalled. Windows Update Diagnostics Hotfix is no longer available or supported.

I ran chkdsk & sfc. Both processes report the comp in good health w/o any errors. DISM.exe is reported not to be on my machine.

I then tried running System Readiness Tool for Windows Vista 64 bit. That loaded a green bar and then stopped with an error message that disappeared off screen. I tried again and now receive this message: "windows update standalone installer encountered an error - 0x8024009 ".
Tried a second time with still the same error.

Will try a clean boot next, and then try the SRT tool again...

I am running out of options.

    @ Evan Omo,

Performed the clean reboot. I opened task manager & in the services tab observed update was running. The windows module installer was not running, so I started the service. Accessed the services screen under computer management & found the windows installer service also was not running. Right clicked the key & started that service.

I then started the System Readiness Tool for Windows Vista 64 bit. It is now running, but not showing any activity on the progress bar. Strange, because the first time it showed activity on the progress bar almost immediately. Hopefully this isn't another 25 hour foray.

For some reason, something keeps shutting off the windows module installer.

So my next question is: What other services are interdependent with the module installer??

    @ Evan Omo,

Since I logged off a few minutes ago, I double checked the windows module installer in both locations. They were both turned off.

Then as I was starting to type this the progress bar for the System Readiness Tool installation flashed green & reports installation complete.

My update history shows the hotfix for windows (KB947821) as failed with two successful installs after this.
I just tried the pending defender update & am now waiting for it to complete. So far no activity in the progress bar. Usually it shows some progress with green flashes moving left to right. It just notified me the update was successfully installed.

I am still in the clean boot mode. Will try to return the comp to normal...

Now all I need to know is the answer to the question in my previous post. Plus if you or any other member knows of anything that keeps turning off the module installer.

I will wait for an answer before marking this resolved....

You can look on the dependencies tab on the Windows Modules Installer service to see what services the Windows Modules installer service relies on but the service is designed to stop and start on its own so you don't need to manually start it.

How is the Windows Update process working now? Did running the System Update Readiness Tool help at all?

    @ Evan Omo,

Thank you for your assistance & the info I requested. Your links were very informative & helpful.

I tried windows update just prior to logging on. It performed normally with a functioning progress bar, created a restore point, d/l & completed 2 optional updates in less than 5 minutes.

The System Update Readiness Tool seems to have done its job, so I will mark this as resolved.

Hopefully this is the end of it.....

If the support has ended for Vista, what updates are you getting? AV Definition updates would be about all you'd get?

    @ retiredlearner,

I apologize for the tardy response. Did not expect any more comments on a resolved issue.

I am not aware support has ended for Vista...

The updates that I am getting are security updates, six (6) security updates for Vista x64 (KB#s), cumulative security update for IE 9, malicious software removal tool x64 & windows defender. [all marked important] They do not send any AV definition updates.

I tried updating the package described above @ 3:00 pm on 15 Nov. It only took 26 hours, completing @ 5:07 pm today.

To rub salt in the wound, @ 7:30 pm, ms says I have four (4) more important updates. three (3) (KB#s: 3194371, 3196718 & 3198218) plus defender.

I will try installing these new updates after midnight & report back how much time this takes.
Then I will try Evans' repair again.

This now makes it the third time for me to be repairing windows update this year.

    Sorry for the late reply,

After totally shutting down the machine & rebooting, it finally took the 4 updates in 15 minutes. It is still wonky but I'll just have to live with it. After April, I'll just use it to retrieve e-mail. We can consider this resolved.

I want to thank you all for you assistance......
