Net adapter status.PNG My PC can only get 9.4 Mbs download speed where my laptop gets 70+Mbs in the same router port. It used to run faster (although I cannot remember the numbers), but something has changed recently to drop the speed drastically. See attached snip for network adapter status. I cannot find any settings that have to do with connection speed. Help!

    Using the same cable?

Have you scanned for malware? It is possible your NIC is going bad.

In that Ethernet Status windows click on Properties > Advanced tab. There should be an item in the list named something like Speed or Speed & Duplex. Verify it's set to Auto Negotiate or the adapter's highest capability.

I'll be running a full scan tonight for malware, but as far as the NIC going bad, I suppose it is possible but the "Ethernet Status" window (above snip) shows the speed as 10 Mbps. Makes me think something is not set right.

Speed and Duplex is set for auto negotiate. I changed it to 100Mbps full duplex and it still ran at 10. I am starting to think the NIC may be going bad...which is on the motherboard. I'll wait for a while to see if anyone comes up with anything else, then go buy a NIC.

Before you buy a new network card try this:
    1. Uninstall the network adapter in Device Manager > reboot and let Windows reinstall the drivers automatically. The existing driver could be corrupted. If no joy then do the following:
    2. Swap out the cat5 cable and see if get some joy.

As I implied before and as TonyT suggested, try a different Ethernet cable. They are essential and critical, but fragile network devices.

    I get 9.47 Gbps.
Thanks. I'll give that a try this weekend. Not much time to mess with it until then.

Speedtest.net doesn't offer Gbps. So it's more likely Mbps, the default setting.

Open a DOS box and ping a couple of sites, like Yahoo, and Google.. Check the return times for consistent numbers. If they are jumping all over the place probably have a hardware, i.e. cable issue

    Especially a long ping ping -n 25 yahoo.com

Success! In the process of swapping out the cable I discovered that I had run it through a surge suppressor in my UPS. Turns out the suppressor was the culprit. Thanks. I probably would have bought a net adapter if you hadn't put me on the possibility of a bad cable. Generally, cables that are not subject to movement do not just up and go bad, so I was not suspecting that. I

Very true. But they do some times get yanked or tripped over, or something heavy is put on top of them pinching wires. They can even be chewed on by puppies and mice.

Yes, and sometimes just picking up a router to dust a shelf beneath it can leave a cable in a position where the contacts are not tight enough.
