Resolved IE8 update to 11 - Catch 22

    I am reinstalling Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit for a friend. The restore copy on his computer has reloaded IE8. I have tried to download and install IE11 for Windows 7, but the installer says I must first install a number of updates, eg KB2729094 etc. Although the Windows Update program has installed about 20 updates automauically, it has not twigged that I need to have the necessary updates for IE 11 and it has not recognised that IE 8 is installed.

    When I go to the page listing the updates required and click on the first, not a lot happens, but since it is a small file, I allow it to download. When I click on the second, KB3731771, a dialog appears saying that only one instance of wusa.exe can be run.

    I am using another Browser, Sea Monkey in fact, because Microsoft will not accept IE 8 on its website. So can anyone please help me out of this catch 22 situation. How do I update IE8 to IE11??

    Thanks for the reply lj50. Yes it has been installed and I have also tried a number of suggestions on the web, eg deleting Software Distribution files etc. You see one of the things I do not understand about Microsoft softies is the need for so many updates. Why do they not roll them up into one and make Windows Update a much more user friendly program. It really is a mess.

    I updated nine laptops used for training that hadn't been turned on in a year or more... There were 195 updates to begin with.... You should bite the bullet and let windows do it's thing. Just getting the updated took on average 8 hours...

    I just had to reinstall Win 7 Pro and ran the Windows Update Readiness Tool. You have to let this tool run it takes quite some time, but you have to let if finish.

    Following a clean install, Windows Update remains at "Checking For Updates" forever...

    A few weeks ago, I followed the procedure and it works. It took 5-10 minutes to find all the updates and some 30 minutes to download and install.

    In addition to the updates mentioned in the article, I also downloaded (in advance) and installed the Convenience rollup update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (the closest thing to SP2 for Windows 7) which significantly reduces the number of updates needed.

    I unchecked IE11 from the updates list (after letting WU loose on the system) and saved it for last. When I finally choose to install IE11, WU automatically downloaded and installed all prerequisite updates.

    As indicated in a previous post, SP1 has to be installed when starting the procedure!

    Also, as you have noticed, IE8 can't be used at Microsoft but another browser to download the updates in advance.

    Isn't the WURT checking for compatibility with the upgrade to Windows 10? If I'm correct, what bearing does it have on a fresh installation of Windows 7?

    Gents, Thanks for all your replies and suggestions. I had heard of the rollup for Windows 7 etc but was not sure how to go about this. I will be returning the laptop to my friend and he can use Sea Monkey and wait for the other updates. If they do not download I will be seeing to it.
