Last evening I started Windows 10 upgrade. I didn't think it would take so long. I started in the evening , after 6 hours, I went to bed at 1am, it was at 97%. I woke up at 8am, only to find it's at 99%.
Its around 13 hours and counting. I have a super fast fiber connection, does this mean something is wrong?
I know this is a major update, but the whole Windows OS doesn't take this long. I hear it can take a long time, to have patients, but is this to long?
How could anything take this long?

    Chris.

I've heard and also read on this forum that an "automated online upgrade" can take for ever! Just sit on your hands and pray that there will be no power failure ... ... !

Why don't they have a place to exit and start up at another time? Microsoft makes it so you have to have your computer on, can't shut it down over a two day period? No consideration that people have lives? Circumstances where they may not be able to do that? All this and I've been defending MS since it came out.

I have another drive I want to put in the computer. I have a days worth of stuff I could be doing now with that HD. I can't shut it down to put it in!!!

It's more then just having patients for it to get done. It's setting me back in more ways then one.

    Chris.

Not really fair to blame MS on this. There are millions of things in life that cannot be paused once you start.

There are 1000s of files that get replaced or modified during this massive upgrade.

I note during my upgrades (depending on where in the upgrade the process was) the computers would go to sleep, pausing the upgrade because I had not wiggled the mouse or pressed a key in a long time. I found that frustrating, but that is really a hardware function.

Well, who would you blame for it, Linux? Even at 1,000's of files shouldn't take this long. The computer is hardly working. The HD light blinks once in a while.

No update should take, coming up on 16 hours to install. 16 hours? Really?

Over 100*, going up to the lake. 17 hours and counting. Seems like the computer is sitting here idling. Is there anyway to know if it's doing anything?

    Thank you,
    Chris.

I was talking about you complaining that MS does not allow you to exit and startup at another time once the upgrade process starts. I am saying you cannot blame Microsoft for not providing that option. You cannot exit a heart transplant in the middle of the surgery, then, when convenient to the surgeon, finish up at a later date.

As far as it taking so long - without having the computer in front of me, I would not know who to blame. Like I said, it could be your computer going to sleep. Or it could be a corrupt driver or something else. But since there have been over 300 million computers upgraded to W10 already, and the vast majority had no problems at all and didn't take such excessive time to complete, it is hard to point the finger at Microsoft.

I would have shut down the comp long before this. I tend to treat it as a power outage that can occur without notification. I have found that the downloads or upgrades re-commence when powered on again. MS OS's are more robust than they were in the past.
I would use the MS media Creation Tool and download the ISO and use either DVD or USB install method if time is critical.
All my W10 upgrades/installs have taken between 1½ and 1¾ hours to fully install and that includes 2 "Insider" installs (currently build #14393)
My last W10 upgrade was on the wife's Desktop from W8.1 Pro 64bit to W10 'ditto' on the 26/07/16.

I came home tonight at 10pm and it was done. I wondered if it had to do with it being the last day to upgrade for free. I was down to 7 hours left when I started. Could of been millions of people trying to beat the deadline.

Glad windowsbbs has "make Windows 10 look like Windows 7.

Thank you, and sorry for the short temper, It's hot in here and wasn't prepared to have to wait so long.

    Chris.

    That probably was a factor.

Must not of been a factor. I wiped the drive and reinstalled again ( "windows is in an unclean state "). I installed Windows 7, then installed Windows 10 upgrade from a disc. I clicked on the "run" and it then said, "getting updates. "
I've had this thing "getting updates" for several hours last night. Started again this afternoon (almost 9:30pm as this writing). If I download from the internet, it takes 17+ hours. Installing from a disc takes several hours (and counting). The entire windows 7 was under an hour, that means just the 4 or so GB upgrade takes a many times longer. Another product that gets worse then the previous one.

And to think I was going to come home this afternoon to finish the install, watch motocross on the computer. Another day wasted with windows.

    Chris.

P.S. If it's not done tonight, that will be 3 days to install an upgrade.

Went to download Security Essentials. It started updating and the bar came to a stop about 1/3 of the way. Just sits there doing nothing. My copy is legit, so wonder why it's not updating?

If you have updated to W10 - why are you downloading MSE??? Defender is the new name for MS Anti-virus and it is on auto unless you install another AV program (Norton/AVG/Avast/MacAfee)
Have a look in Start > Settings > Update and Security > Windows Defender. Neil.

I'm sorry, I gave up on Windows 10 (4 days and no update is more then long enough). I did a clean install of Windows 7 and it wouldn't update either. I downloaded SE and it stops 1/3 of the way to update it. I found someone on the Internet that had 4 different 7/10 installs do the same thing.

You might try the new "convenience rollup" for Windows 7. It resolves some of the current issues with Microsoft Update.

Update Win 7 All At Once With MS Convenience Rollup

When you run it, give yourself plenty of time, and be patient. It installs updates from February 2011 to May 16, 2016.

The download is 316MB for the 32 bit version, and 477MB for the 64 bit.

The linked article will give you the details.
