I get 1 or 2 mail failure messages a day form mailer-daemon@kundenserver.de that show up in my spam folder. I use att/yahoo webmail that was originally @sbcglobal.net, but when I dropped att DSL, they let me keep my email account. Am I correct that if an email I send is undelivered, that the notice I receive should be from mailer-daemon@att.net or mailer-daemon@yahoo.com? And am I correct in assuming that the messages from kundenserver.de are spam and are a phishing expedition? Am I correct that my email server is either att or yahoo?

Nope. You misunderstand my message. I'm not concerned about those non-delivery messages going to my spam folder. I'm glad they do. I haven't even opened the email messages. I'm trying to understand the server thing. How can a server in Germany be my email server? I'm in California. What does a server in Germany have to do with my att/yahoo mail?

From what I have seen on the web - YES. And all the users complaining are told that the best fix is to block/deny access in your email filters.

I finally did confirm that the email re non-delivery was spam since I did get a legitimate non-delivery email from MAILER-DAEMON@yahoo.com which is my webmail server. I now happily let all emails from mailer-daemon@kundenserver.de go directly to my spam folder.

Anybody can SEND an email message using any FROM name and any FROM address. I could send a message to an address that does not exist (president-obama at voterepublican.com) using your email address as the FROM or REPLY-TO address. And YOU will get a "message undeliverable" message from voterepublican.com mail server.

That's nice to know, Tony, although I don't understand what the objective would be for the person doing it, since the email does not get delivered, or what this information has to do with my original post. Are you saying that someone in Germany is using my email address to send emails to whomever for whatever purpose? And if that's true, what am I supposed to do about it? What's true for me is that any communication from mailer-daemon@kundenserver.de goes in my spam folder and I ignore it and don't open it. Can you think of any reason I should do otherwise?

Well, bulk mail authors (spam) will collect addresses and make up addresses. For example, a spammer can use software to compose a message and automatically generate addresses for a domain such as abc.com. It will send the message to allen at abc, com, alfred at abc.com, bill at, bob at, carl at, etc etc. And all the messages will be sent by "joe at microsoft.com ". He doesn't care if 80% get rejected because he's sending 10 million messages. 2 million will reach valid recipients' inboxes or spam folders. And the rejected ones are bounced back to joe at microsoft.

kundenserver.de is a mail server domain which handled thousands of email accounts, probably millions. It's used as a mail relay, in other words, one can have an account there and use it for bulk mail. afaik it's owned and used by 1and1.com hosting company.

Someone in australia could have a domain hosted by 1and1.com and use that domain to send spam. Your address is already on spammer lists, spam is sent to you probably daily. And it's known that your address is valid. Thus you receive spam and you send spam. You don't actually send the spam but your address is used to send spam. So is everybody elses'!
