Same USB devices worked on Win 7, not Win 10

I just upgraded three computers from Windows 7 to Windows 10. On one of these, after the conversion, my legacy multifunction printer, and a remote weather display device, each ceased working.

For the printer, the Win 10 diagnostic reported that the USB 2.0 printer would not work properly with the USB 3.0 connection. Of course, only hours previously the same connection worked just fine with the same printer under Windows 7.

For the weather display, it seems to be connected, but so far no transmissions have made it from the computer to the display.

I've searched around the Internet, and their was some discussion on the "USB 2.0 device" not being recognized by Win 10. From what I read, nobody had a solution yet.

I contacted Epson, and we were able to get it to print by creating a new printer device. When it go to the point where you selected a connection type, no physical USBs were listed (even though my computer has many of them, the others working just fine). So we selected a "virtual USB 001" port which did get the printer to print with a basic version 1.0 Epson driver, but some two way communications (like a query of ink remaining) don't work.

Has anyone run into this, and even better yet, have a suggestion for a fix?

    Thanks for any help,

    Terry

Hi Terry, Did all 3 W7 comps use the same printer? Did you get MS Compatibility reports on each of the comps? Have you checked for drivers from your motherboard manufacturers? Has the comp in question had a Restart and a full shut down and Reboot? Has Windows fully updated the comp? Neil.

    Good questions.

I generally only use the printer on this one desktop computer.

MS compatibility reports (if you mean the short report it gives to encourage you to upgrade to Win10) were the same for all three computers, only noting that the computers were not capable of touch screen use.

I get notifications from HP on all new releases, but I've not installed all of them. But I just searched the ones I have received notifications on, to see if any relate to USB connections. The only two I found only affected Windows 7. Remember that the computer connected just fine to the printer within literally hours previously, when it was still running Windows 7. And other USB connections (mouse, camera, Palm PDA, Smart Phone, and jump drives) are all working okay with Windows 10.

Regarding the driver on the printer itself, that was part of the conversation with Epson. And we are using a basic driver for the Epson that works with the "virtual" USB provided by Windows 10. I find it telling that when we were hooking up to that as a new printer device, Win 10 did not offer any physical USB connections to hook the printer to the computer, except for the virtual USB. But there are lots and lots of unused and operable USB ports still available on the computer (I checked them to be sure they are working in Device Manager). That might suggest that there is something wrong with the Windows 10 system and printers. As I noted in my first post, I'm not the only one who has run into this problem.

Has had several restarts and I believe at least one shutdown, but I'll do that again; it is easy.

Also, the connection to the weather station may have cured itself, probably because had the WiFi off last night, and the weather station reconnected and updated the weather.

Sometimes after the upgrade to W10 the odd comp will not respond as quickly as others. This may be due to the fact that some or parts of the W10 may be coming from nearby comps. (this is explained by MS). I have found that my comps will settle down after Downloads of updates from MS immediately to up to a couple to three days. I notice this in speed of reaction to opening Browser or Email, opening MS Word etc. W10 will given the time, find and install suitable drivers to get outdated hardware fully operational. I Posted about this previously when my Genius keyboard (K641) would not function with the number pad/calculator along with Media controls. I was unable to install the drivers from the Genius CD and when I contacted the manufacturers, they said they no longer provided updated drivers for the keyboard as it was no longer in production! I continued to use the keyboard with W10 Pro in this comp and then one day I tried the number pad and lo and behold it worked!! o_O:D The calculator worked and all the other fancy controls on the keyboard functioned. I'm a happy W10 user as given a bit of time - W10 seems to sort things out. Neil.

Okay, I'll wait a while to see if it fixes itself.

    Thanks,

    Terry
