Drivers using a hands-free phone get just as distracted as those holding it in their hand, researchers have found.

Scientists at the University of Sussex found conversations can cause the driver to visually imagine what they are talking about.

This uses a part of the brain normally used to watch the road, the University of Sussex study said.

The findings made the case for all phones to be banned from cars, according to the lead researcher.

I said that the minute they allowed hands free calling. it is because you concentrate on the call and not on driving.
Banning the phone from the car is overreaching, because the passenger can use the phone.
    just my 2 cents

They need to hook something up to the DRIVES seat belt so that he can't use a cellphone. If he don't put the belt on, don't start the vehicle. An onboard camera would help cure this problem with the cell phones. If it catches him using the phone, it can scramble everything going on as far as the phone is concerned for everybody in the car. Then when the passengers can't use their phone because the driver is on his, they can kick his butt when they get out. :p To much technology out there for this to be a big deal.

The BIG selling point with motor vehicles is BLUETOOTH. The advice in NZ is to put the phone in Flight Mode but this requires user input. Given time, someone will reluctantly design an App that will automatically put the phone in Flight Mode if all motor vehicles emit a certain signal when the ignition is switched. Might affect the Police and Emergency Services as I believe they are using cell phones to avoid detection by crims and idiots who listen to the emergency radios. Smart phones usually have GPS ability and are/can be used to direct the driver to their destination. GPS is another distraction when driving - so where does it end??? Neil.

Phone use in a vehicle is totally fine but only if the driver has good judgement. NO CALL is so important so as to be answered when in heavy traffic or wet weather conditions. Most of the time when I'm driving and my phone rings, I let it go to voice mail. Rush hour traffic in my area of the US is the worst in the country, and many drivers here in the Wash, DC metro area are from other states and countries and do not know how to drive efficiently and properly. If you must answer or make a call, pull over to the side of the road.

I retired in 1993 I pulled a lot of people over for a lot of things. Law Enforcement has to seriously start citing for this offense. The best one was a driver eating a sandwich and doing a crossword puzzle while driving on the thruway at 75 mph.

In DC it's a 50 dollar ticket to have a cell phone in hand while driving. If seen by metro police you will get stopped.

In NZ it's $80 but if you are in Australia they get a little more serious - $353.00 fine. It's a joke really if you look at the value of the iPhone or S7 (around $1200NZD). I think the fine should be at least $300.00 and automatic confiscation of the phone for 28 days. What value do you put on a human life/lives? We've had 3 young girls killed in a collision about 3 years ago - the driver was texting while driving on our State Highway and she and her sister and a friend were all killed when she drove into a bridge parapet!

I guess some folks need driver-less cars to use the phone.
