Working on my son's computer, Dell Inspiron 531, that's been out of service since Nov 2015 - last updates. When I try to run updates, it starts checking but never completes. I tried running two Microsoft Updater Fixit tools and they would start the installation but never complete. I did a clean boot and then ran the Windows Update with the same results. Any suggestions? Could we have some malware?

Hi Robert. Have you let Windows Update check for updates and just left it running overnight to see if it eventually completes?

    No I haven't. I'll give that a try.

I booted a spare office with Win 7 a few weeks ago.. It took a couple of hours before it showed it was actually doing something.

I started the machine searching for updates about 7 hours ago and it is still running. I'll give it a few more hours and then I think I may wipe the hard drive and take it to Staple's for recycling. Don't want to spend much more time on this one. Thanks for your response.

Windows Update I believe will eventually complete but it may take a long time depending on how fast the computer is and how many updates need to be installed.

    Evan,
You were right on. I let it run and after 18 hours it had found 57 updates. I installed those, restarted the computer, and searched again for updates. This time it only took a few minutes and found 1. Looks like all is well and I won't have to send this one to the scrap heap. Thanks a lot.
