Resolved Nextbook Windows 10 can't be repaired

    I have (actually belongs to a friend) a Nextbook Flexx 11 that had Windows 10 mobile preinstalled. I don't know what he did to cause it, but it boots to a black screen without a cursor. I can get to advanced options. I've tried following black screen troubleshooting with no luck. I've tried resetting the PC with saving files, and remove everything. When finished, it says there was a problem. Startup repair is unsuccessful as is system restore. It won't enter safe mode. I've tried using BCDedit to rebuild the MBR using this guide: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/repair-master-boot-record-mbr-windows. I've tried sfc /scannow offline, and check disk. I haven't tried DISM /Cleanup-Image tool because the only one I have is Windows 10 Pro and didn't think it would work, but I'm about ready to try it anyway.
    What can I do to repair or replace Windows 10 on this tablet?

    First how old is the tablet. If it's still under warranty(usually a 1 year) if purchased at a local store you can either bring it back to the store or call the manufacturer support phone number. I not to sure about win 10 but I would not try using you licensed copy on any other device. You could start receiving Windows Is Not Genuine error messages on one or ever both devices so err on the side caution.

    How old? The laptop was manufactured in November, and purchased a couple of weeks before Christmas. You're right about the warranty, but if it were that simple, I wouldn't be here. The paperwork plainly states without the sales receipt, they won't do anything. And, of course, he doesn't have it.

    Thanks, but I know how. What I don't know is how to retrieve his product key and download a copy of Windows 10 Mobile. Any ideas?

    I do not know if it will work on Windows 10. Download and install the free version: Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder I think there is an key entry in the registry but I'm not sure if it's binary or hexadecimal HKLM\SOFTEWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\DigitalProductId4. DigitalProductId4 is located in the right pane. There is another entry just above it's for 32-bit.

    Sorry about that. Then neither suggestion will work. There isn't any sticker on the bottom of the machine or Product Number(P/N) in the battery compartment.

    From what I read in Neil's posted link there may not be a battery compartment. Did your friend register the product with Nextbook(located under the menu heading Support). Many manufacturers will put the Serial Number(S/N) and Product Number(P/N) in the BIOS and the box the machine came in. Did you or you friend call the store where he purchased the device or the manufacturer directly. I never dealt with Nextbook but a lot of manufactures will provide support for their products for the first year of ownership if you provide the P/N and/or the S/N. First click on Neil's link then Support\Product Registration. You may need your friend to be with you when you register your product. Have you friend make the initial contact with the manufacturer in order to tell them that he has your permission to help get the machine back up and running.

    If he had, he could get if fixed under warranty. Nextbook very plainly says without a sales slip, they won't help. The sales slip that my friend didn't keep when he bought it. The store would ne no help even if he did have the slip because it's been over 30 days.

    That tablet just comes with the regular version of Windows 10 so you will be able to create a bootable USB drive with a copy of Windows 10 on it for use for a clean install.

    You don't need to worry about a product key as the key is stored in the motherboards UEFI and the system should automatically activate after you reinstall Windows.

    On the box it says Windows 10 mobile, but I'm going to try what you suggest anyway. This has been way too much time and brain drain to fix a computer that isn't mine. Thanks for your help.

    Thanks for looking, but the only recovery images available for this tablet are Windows 8. You can't register or get support for this tablet without proof of purchase, so contacting the manufacturer is a waste of time.

    Can your friend possibly purchase a set of win 10 DVDs from the manufacturer or is the manufacturer only offering win 8 DVDs for that device. WOW! I've read that registration page. One tough policy for support for one of their products. One hard way to learn a valuable lesson. Keep your receipt.
