Hi all. I'm currently running Windows 8.1 Pro on my laptop. I have a Seagate 1TB External Hard Drive and it's causing problems to my laptop and it cannot be opened.

It was working absolute fine until recently, whenever I plug in the external hard drive and I open 'This PC' a.k.a 'My Computer', file explorer would stop responding and the laptop freezes.

I went to driver manager and found that it could detect my external hard drive but then there's no exclamation mark beside it. It looks like every thing is working fine. I tried to reinstall the driver for the drive but it was a futile attempt.

Then, I went to disk management to check if there's any error with my external hard disk but the disk management would get stuck at connecting to virtual disk service.

I have run System File Checker tool(SFC scannow) thrice but it does not help.

I suspected that my external hard drive died or something but it is not. I plug it in to my friend's Samsung laptop and it's working perfectly fine.

I get very frustrated with this as I need my hard disk for my work.

    Anyone has idea about this?

Your help is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance! :D

Hi Arya. Welcome to WindowsBBS.:) Have you tried a System Restore to a time before your problem started? Neil.

Did you try using a different USB port?

Yes I did. I tried plugged in other pen drive to the USB ports and I'm able to use them, so the USB ports are working fine.

Are all MS updates installed? Was a recent one possibly the cause of the problem?
Check your installed updates for any installed around the time the trouble first occurred. Any new software installed? Neil.
