I get a lot of shipments from Amazon.co. So I can be at home to get them when they are delivered at the door, I follow their tracking progress online. To do this, in Win 8.1, with Explorer, I would open the tracking site for the shipment, put it in Favorites, then open Favorites and drag the site link icon to desktop. That way, I could just click on it on the desktop link icon and check the progress of the shipment at any time.

I just installed Win 10 today, which went like a dream and I love it. However, when I got a notice of an Amazon shipment, I tried to put a link on my desktop, but found that in Edge, you can't drag links from the dropdown Favorites list to desktop. You can't copy and paste the link either. Is there any way to get the link, or a copy of it, to desktop in Win 10 with Explorer Edge? TIA

    Web Page Shortcut to Desktop

NOTE: This DOES NOT work in Microsoft Edge, since Edge doesn't offer the ability to generate a web page shortcut (yet).

After reading down your link a bit I came across the above "Note ", which seems to tell me, I'm just not going to be able to do it. I'm really surprised that Microsoft came out with a new version of a browser that lacked features that its old browsers have had for years. I've found other basic things it can't do. This regression doesn't make much sense. Good grief do I love the boot time of Windows 10, though. Thanks anyway.

Why not pin it to the taskbar. Sorry I spoke to soon I just tried to pin ups.com to the taskbar. There isn't an option to do so listed in the Context Menu.

    Web Page Shortcut to Desktop

    Hi Mr. Bill,

I would have thought that I.E. Edge was an upgrade specifically for Win 10, but it really appears inferior to latest version of I.E. I had on Win 8.1.

How would I get back to the latest straight I.E. version and would I have problems going forward with compatibility and upgrades? Thanks for your advice,

    Dennis

IE is included in Win 10 Do a search for it and then pin it to the task bar.

Thanks a Million Mr. Bill, That took care of everything. I found it with search, pinned it to the task bar, then made it my default browser. It worked slow as molasses until I did a reboot, now it is super, with drag and drop and all.

As a note, I tried to upgrade Edge to the latest Java and got the message that Edge can't run Java. After bringing up I.E. 11, I checked and found out that it had already automatically been upgraded to the latest Java version when running in Win 8.1. I'm sure that within a year or so, they'll have Edge up to speed, but until then, I.E. 11 really seems the way to go.

    Thanks again,

    Dennis

Java is extremely insecure and is not required for 99% of web sites - I would uninstall it.

Edge is very much a work in progress and needs much development to rival IE or Firefox.

Got to agree with Pete here. I haven't had Java for probably 3 or 4 years and have never had anything tell me that I need it.

Is it specifically for W10 - calling it an "upgrade" however, is a bit of a stretch. Okay, it is a total and inaccurate misrepresentation. The only thing really going for it is that it is fast. But that may be because it does not support any of the features we like - like add-ons and tearing off tabs to create shortcuts, etc. For this reason (besides the fact I still like IE) I have made IE11 my default.

And I agree 100% with Pete and MrBill. Get rid of Java. Windows does not need it. And the vast majority of all programs don't need it either. Use JavaRA to totally purge your system of all traces of Java. Odds are you will not miss it. But if you do run into a program that needs, you can then install it back. But frankly, it has been several years for me too. And if some program did tell me I needed Java, I would look for an alternative to that program.
