I have used Panda Free for a while now but after the 2016 version (16.01) I noticed some strange quarantining behaviour after a routine updating of an application by its installer. I had the default automatic quarantining disabled but it went ahead and quarantined some of the installer as I tried to run it, making it impossible to update the application program. I have since gone back to Avast! Free. Other people have reported similar instances of problematical quarantines with Panda 2016.

Has anyone else had any problems of a similar kind?

OK, thanks for the reply. I was running Panda Free on Win 7 x64. The installer I tried to run was for FotoSketcher 3.20.

That's interesting thanks, but I have scanned my computer with multiple engines and I have no detected adware/PUP that I am aware of. Furthermore, I have scanned the FotoSketcher installer with Avast!, MBAM and SUPERAntiSpyware with no adware detected. This is very probably a false positive.

But this isn't the problem. The problem is that I told Panda to allow it when it ran and it quarantined something anyway. Later it then claimed that there was no threat and there was nothing quarantined at all (I have automatic default quarantining turned off).

My guess is that this is a false positive that triggered a response from Panda that tried to quarantine something that wasn't there to begin with.

I don't know if this means anything but I uploaded the file (installer) to Virus Total and this was the result:

    https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/...b224e653e2cbf3fdf6ad37e6/analysis/1442175728/

What I don't understand is why it ignored my direction to allow the installer to run. I'm not the only person who has noticed errant behaviour with quarantining activity with Panda 2016.

I just read a recent report re top av programs and Panda was in top 3. The thing that prevented #2 & #3 from being #1 was false positives. All av programs do that though. I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

Panda is a great AV but the new 2016 is a tad buggy and more like a beta. I'm not the only one to notice this. I can live with false positives if I can have control over what to do when the AV discovers suspected malware. You can choose whether to quarantine or not with MBAM for example. Panda ignored my customised settings and appeared to quarantine a ghost as there was nothing actually quarantined when I looked. My point is that there is something wrong with Panda Free's quarantining process.

Weirdly, Avast! also quarantined FotoSketcher, I submitted a ticket and they admitted it was a false positive. Unfortunately, I had a similar problem with Avast! not acting how I'd set it up in customisation.

I can't believe this is some fault of mine, although it is a strange coincidence. I tried twice to get Avast! to 'Ask' what to do when potential malware is detected as is allowed in the custom options. The drop-down option on the alerting pop-up was totally unresponsive. It might be a problematical install of Avast! that caused this.

Either way, I've gone back to MSE for now. Everyone attacks MSE these days, but I used it for years without any problems or infections. I have on-demand scanners and browser hardening.

The plain fact of the matter is that over the years AV's have only ever found false positives on any computers I have owned. Avast! once discovered PUP's being sneaked onto my old laptop during a KMPlayer update. Norton missed a trojan SUPERAntiSpyware found.

I'm in more danger of false positives bricking my PC than malware.
