The above quote pretty much sums it all up, and it is the reason I will be sticking with 7 till the bitter end.

I know a company needs to generate revenue, but this is too much to bear for nuts & bolts computer users like me.

Interesting article. Just use Custom Install. Turn everything off or put no for everything.

His Rant (as he states) leaves me wondering whether he still winds a handle on his wall-mounted telephone and asks an operator to dial a number for him.
As he indicated in his rant - you can dispense with the Tiles and use an alternate Start Menu and stay in the W7 age for as long as you can and reject Feedback completely.
Last evening, my 'Smartphone' (Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505) Updated to Android version 5.0.1 ICS) from the Gingerbread v 2.3.5 and after the install it updated 238 Apps!!!
You either have the nous/inclination to move with the times or stay in the past eras.
It only took me ½ an hour to learn/find my way round a completely new interface including changing a Qwerty Chinese keyboard to 'Engrish' for text and email.
Do me a favour guys and be positive about change - it's about being competitive in the Market place.
End of my Rant. :D Neil.

I use Classic Shell on Windows 7. I prefer the Windows 98 style with menu folders expanding to the right. (actually, it's the Classic style with two columns)

Start8 still works in W10 if needed. Neil.

As retiredlearner posted Start8 works perfectly in 10, but refers to Win 8 in various placess. I'm using Start10 beta - upgrade $3 if I recall, with RTM version Aug 12th. - just dandy :)

People should be using the Custom install option for EVERYTHING they install.

As for the howtogeek article, I see nothing in there I disagree with! The W10 start menu is still clearly an attempt by MS to push their tiles and "metro" apps on us and push out apps we like. Can you find IE through the new menu?

I couldn't. I had to open File Explorer and hunt down iexporer.exe.

If you have not done so already, you might also want to change how Windows Update works on your system. By default, even if you use the Custom install option, the setting is for your system to (my bold underline added) "...get updates and send updates to PCs on my local network, and PCs on the Internet." PCs on the Internet!!! That's too scary for me. You can turn this off but I set mine to "PCs on my local network ". Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced Options > Choose how updates are delivered.

I had Start8 on my system and loved it. And yes, it does work with W10, but Start10 works better and I recommend it highly. For only $5 ($3.99 for Start8 owners), it's a bargain.

Yep that should be common sense by now!

Yeah and I doubt many users actually use any of those universal apps so for me those apps are useless and are just taking up disk space. At least you can uninstall them, How to Uninstall Desktop and Windows Apps in Windows 10.

That's just the tip of the iceberg for the amount of data Microsoft wants to collect about you.

Fortunately you can turn all of the privacy settings off easily with a third party program, Fix 35+ privacy issues in Windows 10.

I still think its ridiculous that you have to disable so many of these pointless privacy settings just to have control over Windows 10. I wonder how many data collecting services are running in the background when compared to Windows 7?

Windows 10 is definitely worse in the privacy department and that you can't even hide driver updates when using Windows Update is a major flaw.

StartIsBack also works with Windows 10 so that's good news.

You would think, huh? But for folks that don't regularly visit tech support forums (which is the vast majority of the 1 Billion potential W10 users), that is not common sense. :( Otherwise, the forums would not have lots of users complaining about unwanted toolbars, home pages, auto-updaters and programs installed they don't need or want.

Yeah, I know several who prefer StartIsBack so that is good news.

    ****

I was brought up not to complain about something given to me for free, but it is hard not to with all these privacy issues, the hiding of wanted programs like IE, and the semi-return of the Start menu. The good news is I am confident Microsoft will not use this data for evil deeds. My worries are who they may share the data with - not that they will use it for evil deeds, but that they may not control and protect my data and that it may end up in the hands of a badguy who will then use my data for evil deeds. :(

I asked this question last year. As far as cloud services and now Microsoft's insistence on collecting everyone's personal information and data. Once Microsoft has possession of all that information and data. Who owns all that information and data? Microsoft or the person who was either knowingly or unknowingly duped into providing it?

Users of W10 Pro can hide updates to defer installs and users with W10 Home cannot. I believe this will be possible for 6 months.
There is a KB307930 which has something to do with this deferral of updates. Neil.
