If I create a backup of Windows 10 on a Flash drive, do I format it as a recovery drive or just normally?

Also, is there a way to set up a new recovery image for Windows 10 without all the installation software.

I found a way to create the image but it does the whole hard drive which is much too big a file. I would just like to do the basics as i can't find storage media big enough to do the whole drive.

As matters now stand, if something were to go wrong, I think I would have to reset all the way back to Windows 8.0, do all the updates including Windows 8.1 then install Windows 10 from my backup copy.

Backup of installed Windows or Win10 setup ?

Image software can do that for you.

Image file would depend on various factor - the software used for imaging, no.of files, compression used, size of files etc. You can't just image selected files. Its either all or none. Most of the imaging software can split the image file though I haven't used this feature.

Win 10 has inbuilt recovery methods just like Win 8. You would have to reinstall everything only if you muck up very badly.
