Hi, I have an old Dell laptop. with FF 31.0 XP-sp-3 80gb hdd & 256mb of ram. I kept it just because. Well I dug it out, the last time I used it, it was very slow. down load speed & up load was 1mb. The culprit it seems was my Panda Anti Virus it was up dated last year. Well I deleted all traces of it and now every thing works faster. DL is now 7-mbps & 10 mbps, againg this is like maybe a laptop when XP first came out, so not sure what the DL speed should be but I am happy with 7 mbps as opposed to under 1 mbps.

Now I am looking for a anti virus for it. I do Malwarebytes anti-maleware, but no AV. Any ideas for a AV for Old Betsy that won't slow it down. I thinking of an older version on one of the free AV over on:

    Thanks Gary

I have used Comodo Internet Security (freeware) with Windows XP on a machine that was not too old. It works fine, firewall and antivirus in one.

laptop is like 12 or 13 yrs old

OK, I read some reviews and it seems to work great with faster computers, but my laptop is not state of the art only

The one I used it on is a 1,8 GHz AMD Athlon with 1 GB RAM shared with graphics. No slowdowns because any background task that is running while the computer is idling, gets halted as soon as you touch the keyboard. I used it "out of the box ", no tweaks.

Oh, OK I'll give it a try then. BTW what type of `down/up load speeds do you get. With ff 31 I get 7mbps down & 8 upload. With IE 8 I get 11 up down and also about 11 up.

The other computers and devices all get at least 40 down and ten up.

I am thinking the modem in my xp laptop will not handle much more. But like I said when I had panda my speeds were under 1 mbps for down/up load.

As soon as I uninstalled it my speed went up to what it is now.

I haven't tested on Firefox but on Internet Explorer I get what I pay for, 100/100 Mbps. Occasionally, it delivers better performance but sometimes a bit slower. When downloading large files, like a service pack or updates from Microsoft, it happens that it gets veeeeeery slooow but then I cancel and try again later to get my normal speed. That has nothing to do with my hardware or software.

you are talking about these speeds with the "1,8 GHz AMD Athlon with 1 GB RAM shared with graphics "

I thought my 7-11 mbps were because of the wireless on my laptop. I use a linsky pci in a slot on the laptop. Maybe I'll try using a Ethernet Cable and see if there is a difference

Yup, those speeds are by cable and I have no wireless networking to compare. The speeds are the same with my current computer (the one in "my system ") which means that processor and RAM have little or any effect at all.
