I am not able to update my x86 Win7 PRo install. I have tried the Windows Readiness tool along with removing and reintalling the .net files.

I ran scannow and get the following errors at the bottom of the log file. Can anyone advise as to whether repairing these files will prevent me from doing a repair install? I would do the repair but it would take me about 10 - 12 hours of downloading to bring W7 up to date given my pathetic internet connection.

If there is any other info one needs, let me know

    Thanks

Thanks, I have the DVD but those files are nowhere to be found in searching it.
    apisetschema.dll
    smss.exe
    csrsrv.dll

I get the feeling that this isn't what I should be looking for.

Wouldn't running the 'Repair' replace any missing files.

Please explain 'update'? Do you mean that WU doesn't work or are you trying re-install W7? Neil.

windows update has about 7 items that it fails at.
Research indicates that I should run the system readiness tool along with the dot net uninstall / reinstall routine, both of which I successfully have.
Ran the Fix It Windows Update troubleshooter with no success.
I tried renaming the Software Distribution folder.
Tried installing updates individually and en mass without success.
I ran sfc /scannow and the results for missing files are in my first post. Scannow did not attempt to call for the Win7 DVD.
Previous restore points are of no help.
It isn't a dual booting system and there are no peripherals plugged in.
I was hoping to avoid doing a repair install of Windows as it will take me hours to update from SP1 due to the pathetic internet speed in my area but, if I must, I must...
Hopefully, a few more ideas may spring forward before having to bite the bullet

Yes I did that yesterday and re-ran this morning.

I get all errors fixed except Windows Update error 0x80073712

I am directed to run SFC /scannow and the Update Readiness tool

Now when I try to run the SFC I get an error message that there is a system repair pending which requires a reboot. The message still appears after rebooting

    Trying to update again fails.

    Hi cspgsl.

Before performing a repair install lets try this method to repair your system:

    1. Download the portable version of Windows Repair (All In One) from here, Windows Repair (All In One). (Make sure you have your computer running in a clean boot state BEFORE running repairs. If you need assistance with performing a clean boot then follow the instructions here, How to perform a clean boot in Windows)

    2. Download the portable zipped folder to your desktop.

    3. Extract the contents of the zipped folder, and then right click on the Repair_Windows.exe file and select run as administrator.

    4. After the program opens, click on the Step 3 tab and click the Do It button to have the program run Check Disk on the file system. Screenshot.

    5. After the computer finishes running Check Disk, start the program again and proceed to Step 4.

    6. Click on the Step 4 tab and click on the Do It button to allow the program to run the System File Checker to find and fix any corrupt Windows files. Screenshot.

    7. After SFC finishes, proceed to the Step 5 tab.

    8. On the Step 5 tab go ahead and create a new system restore point before starting the repair by clicking on the Create button under the System Restore area. Screenshot.

    9. Once that is done click on the Start Repairs tab.

    10. On the Start Repairs tab click on the Start button and select Run when prompted. Screenshot.

    11. The Windows Repairs window will open. Now ensure that ONLY the checkboxes in the program are checked as indicated below:

    Reset Registry Permissions
    Reset File Permissions
    Reset Service Permissions
    Register System Files
    Repair WMI
    Repair Windows Firewall
    Repair Internet Explorer
    Repair MDAV/MS Jet
    Repair Hosts Files
    Remove Policies Set By Infections
Repair Start Menu Icons Removed by Infections
    Repair Icons
    Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
    Remove Temp Files
    Repair Proxy Settings
    Repair Windows Updates
Set Windows Services to Default Startup
    Restore Important Windows Services
    Repair MSI (Windows Installer)

    12. Then when those checkboxes are selected, click on the checkbox that says Restart System when Finished.

    13. Now click on the Start button to start the repair process.

    14. The process could take some time so please be patient.

    15. After the repair process finishes, the computer will be rebooted.

    16. See if there is any difference after performing the above steps.

No go. I tried the BSA and it found 9 Security Updates missing. I tried to download them vs. going to Win Update and they failed.

I tried Win Update and no change.

Ran Windows Repair and it hasn't allowed for updates to happen either.

Did you try performing a clean boot in Windows and seeing if the updates install? What is the current error message that you get when attempting to install updates from Windows Update?

I bit the bullet, backed up and am doing a clean install. Might as well while I have the chance.

So, Microsoft is advising end-users to do an in-place reinstall of Windows 7 now?

I saw similar instructions on another site, but I had problems updating IE 11 on two separate machines (both were OEMs) after doing the in-place reinstall. I read somewhere that this process does not work well with OEM disks.
