I have a Win 7 Pro machine where from time to time, without warning, the desktop icons become unmovable.

They still function normally. I can click on them and the related program or folder opens. The context menu appears on right click and works normally but I cannot drag them anywhere. They are frozen in place.

The display settings are all standard. Nothing has been altered from the installation of Windows. Windows is up to date as it the display adapter.

Restarting the computer fixes the problem... sometimes. I have disabled all startup programs.

I have read other posts that blame IE 8 but it is running IE 11.

One other clue is that is seems to happen when a new folder is created by right clicking on the desktop and choosing new. Not always but we just realized this today.

I am at a loss to figure out why. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Hi cspgsl. Have you right clicked on the desktop< select View and unchecked Auto arrange icons and Align icons to grid?

So you have no other issues running programs from Win 7? Everything runs fast and smooth including saving and closing. The next time this happens (or perhaps the folder creation will recreate the problem) check task manager to see if anything looks unusual like multiple copies of explorer.exe running.

Seek out and delete the file called IconCache.db found in the folder:

    C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local

The issue hasn't been resolved as yet. It is completely random but hasn't happened within the last couple of weeks. I will start another thread if it does
