I use Pale Moon (64-bit version of Firefox) as my primary browser, but would like to keep IE as a backup. My OS is 64-bit Win7 SP1 which, as I understand it, has IE 10 built in.

The problem is that IE has never worked. It opens, but the window immediately closes. This morning I installed IE 11, hoping that it would correct the problem, but exactly the same thing happens ... IE opens a window, but it immediately closes.

    Any thoughts?

Have you tried Safe Mode with Networking and see what happens?

Hi Jim. If you click Start< in the Start search box type iexplore.exe -extoff and click on the iexplore.exe -extoff result, does IE11 open with no add-ons successfully?

If that doesn't work then give this a shot, How to reset Internet Explorer settings.

    Bill, Omo ...

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, none of them helped. In all cases, the IE window remained open, but I was unable to access any website.

Truthfully, this isn't a major issue for me, as it's the ONLY program on my computer which (as far as I know) doesn't work. It's just frustrating that I can't seem to find a fix.

    Have you rebooted the PC?

Maybe malware? Have you run any scans?

    Bill ...

This has been the case for as long as I can remember so, yes, I've rebooted ... daily, if not more frequently, and my computer is squeaky clean.

If possible I would try creating a new user profile on your machine and see if IE11 runs on the new user account. If IE11 still doesn't work then there is one other thing we can try.

    Evan ...

Let's try the "one other thing" first.

Unless I'm missing something, if IE won't run properly using Windows Safe Mode with Networking, I don't see how creating a new user profile would make any difference.

    Alright Jim, fair enough.

Lets try this method to repair your system:

    1. Download the portable version of Windows Repair (All In One) from here, Windows Repair (All In One). (Make sure you have your computer running in a clean boot state BEFORE running repairs. If you need assistance with performing a clean boot then follow the instructions here, How to perform a clean boot in Windows)

    2. Download the portable zipped folder to your desktop.

    3. Extract the contents of the zipped folder, and then right click on the Repair_Windows.exe file and select run as administrator.

    4. After the program opens, click on the Step 3 tab and click the Do It button to have the program run Check Disk on the file system. Screenshot.

    5. After the computer finishes running Check Disk, start the program again and proceed to Step 4.

    6. Click on the Step 4 tab and click on the Do It button to allow the program to run the System File Checker to find and fix any corrupt Windows files. Screenshot.

    7. After SFC finishes, proceed to the Step 5 tab.

    8. On the Step 5 tab go ahead and create a new system restore point before starting the repair by clicking on the Create button under the System Restore area. Screenshot.

    9. Once that is done click on the Start Repairs tab.

    10. On the Start Repairs tab click on the Start button and select Run when prompted. Screenshot.

    11. The Windows Repairs window will open. Now ensure that ONLY the checkboxes in the program are checked as indicated below:

    Reset Registry Permissions
    Reset File Permissions
    Reset Service Permissions
    Register System Files
    Repair WMI
    Repair Windows Firewall
    Repair Internet Explorer
    Repair MDAV/MS Jet
    Repair Hosts Files
    Remove Policies Set By Infections
Repair Start Menu Icons Removed by Infections
    Repair Icons
    Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
    Remove Temp Files
    Repair Proxy Settings
    Repair Windows Updates
Set Windows Services to Default Startup
    Restore Important Windows Services
    Repair MSI (Windows Installer)

    12. Then when those checkboxes are selected, click on the checkbox that says Restart System when Finished.

    13. Now click on the Start button to start the repair process.

    14. The process could take some time so please be patient.

    15. After the repair process finishes, the computer will be rebooted.

    16. See if there is any difference after performing the above steps.

    Evan ...

I spent a good part of this morning working with your "one other thing ", to no avail. There's no change in the way IE behaves ... its window remains open, but I can do nothing with it.

As I said in an earlier post the inability to use IE isn't a big deal for me so I'm going to mark this thread "Resolved ", even though the resolution wasn't a satisfactory one.

It's unfortunate that we weren't able to get IE11 working for you Jim. If you don't want to do any further troubleshooting on this matter then we can call it a day.

It will run in Safe Mode. Have downloaded a lot of cleanup programs in Safe Mode to fix many PC's.

Sorry, Bill ... I thought it was obvious that when I wrote "if IE won't run properly using Windows Safe Mode with Networking" I was referring to MY computer.
