Recently I notice on my Windows 7 Home premium I7 64bit computer that System restore does not appear to be able to access restore points. If I try to do a system restore, it goes through the motions and then at bootup I get the message:

System restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

    Details:
System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point.
    Source: %SystemRoot%\registration
    Destination: ComPlusStaging

You can try system restore again etc, etc

I did a search for this problem but could not find anything hence the post.

    Any assistance much appreciated.

A common problem and the fix seems to be a repair install of Windows 7.
    But first, you can try:
    1. using system restore in Safe Mode or
    2. disable System Restore to delete all restore points, then re-enable it and manually create a new point.

  3. to hide this advert.

Thanks Tony, must admit never used safe mode before, not had the need to. As for the 2nd option, by disabling System restore, does this automatically delete restore points?

    Cheers

Yes, disabling it deletes all restore points.

I have tried everything and gave up. Sent the machine to my Computer shop I bought the computer from. They had the machine for 3 days and could not get system restore to work, I know the tech very well and he said he tried everything possible. Had him totally beat. I got the computer back today and was advised that probably a re-format was in order, they did not charge me as they could not fix the problem.

Error is an old chestnut with me, been plagued and still error persists. I have tried everything suggested by helpful members. Microsoft help team say no repair is known, yet the Microsoft Chat say they can use software with remote, good I thought until informed a charge of £147 would incur.

Thanks for the information. SpywareDr, have you tried this as I really do not want to lose my stuff and have to do a re-format? Definitely seems worth a try that is for sure.

Keep us inform, Exfso, if you try Doc's posted suggestion.

I've never had the chance to try the non-destructive reinstall on my Windows 7 machine yet, so I am interested in how your situation turns out.

Yep will do when I get around to it. Having said that, I intend to back up everything in case it goes Pear shaped, one can never assume it is all going to go as planned.

Best thing that has been said so far. If you are like me, back up everything and nothing will go wrong. Back up nothing the world will end as soon as it boots up and you look for something. :D

My copy of Windows 7 is an update from Vista and purchased from HP. Windows 7 disk has the product key, will it allow to carry out a non destructive restore? or is Windows 7 has to be purchased from Microsoft?

Don't believe I've had that opportunity yet. Give it a shot, let us know what you find out.

(Do a verified backup first of course).

    No problem. :)
