I can no longer open the Help & Support by clicking Desktop Icon. No error is displayed as to reason. What steps required repair ERROR?

In light of some of the problems you are having in this thread and others, try running the system file checking tool, and see if that helps.

Hit the start menu and type in cmd. Look to the right and right-click on cmd and choose to run as administrator. Type sfc /scannow and hit the enter key.

Windows will do a check for damaged or missing system files.

James, I tried another cmd, it showed no errors exists. A restore, shows as unable to carry out as VSS can not be activated. Checking Services it shows that VSS is not Started - Manual. Changing to Start makes no difference and on Restart shows VSS as not Started. My computer appears to great delight in giving me a severe headache.

Mine is set to manual, too, and it is not started either.

I'm not proficient in this area of Windows, but have you tried setting the service to automatic?

James, problem is it does no show as "started" by Windows, this making VSS not functioning. I require to know, how I can make VSS start with a computer start up then choose Manual or Automatic. I can change to "Started" which appears to make no difference to Restore or Backup and on start up "Started" is once more automatically deleted from VSS.

Have you tried making the service automatic and then restarting your computer?

For what it's worth, I set VSS to start automatically on my machine, restarted the computer, rechecked VSS, and it said the service was started and on automatic. I have since stopped the service and set it back to manual.

James, as I said, you can set to Manual or Automatically. Fault is in the first column which should show as Started, if it shows "blank" (as in my case" it shows VSS is not installed giving reason for error. If I can find way to make VSS open as "started" by changing what ever is causing the error or reversing current setting in Windows it will remain as it is just now.

Found this tool that may be of some help with your Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) problem...

I've never used it before, so I can't guide you on it, but looks rather simple to use.

The program (according to Major Geeks) is part of a larger Windows Repair tool by Tweaking.com...

(there is a video description of this larger tool if you scroll down a ways)

James, thank you for software titles. I tried them, but requires payment of £29 per year and as I have a similar software tool in Auslogic BootSpeed 5. BootSpeed 5 appears to do the job of tweeting computer, BootSpeed 6 caused havoc with MS Essentials and required to remove same and claime back the update fee (last for 12 months). If Reimage could carry out the repair of my Backup/Restore facility, but no assurance is given and being retired money is not in abundance in my case. Bobby.

The tools I linked to are free - unless you clicked on the wrong download button.

    Try this...

And this for the all-in-one tool...

I can't vouch for any of these tools, but the programmer seems like a neat, intelligent guy, with a penchant for helping others.

    He has two web sites...

EDIT: I did try the all-in-one tool on my aging XP setup. There's quite a bit of action going on in the form of batch files opening command prompt windows. It must have taken at least 20 minutes for the processes to complete, and then I had to reboot the PC in the end. No harm was done to XP from what I can tell. I did not not run the tool on Windows 7.

James, the first software is chargeable, second performed very well, showing one or two failures but not repair. I tried "reimage PCScan & Repair ", charge of £29, however on their chat facility, I asked if software would reinstall Backup/Restore -- their reply was no answers until their software purchased and abruptly terminated the chat. Not a good sign that their software is good
if they can't answer a simple question. Thanks for your help, appreciated.

Sounds like you may need to do a repair install of Windows 7. :(

I'll leave that to someone with more experience.
