    Hi all,

Does anyone know why Windows 7 built-in search tool is so slow compared to the one in XP? XP can find a file - on the fly - much faster than Windows 7 ever could, unless Windows 7 has already indexed the file.

I have thought about installing a third-party search tool, such as Copernic, to do searches with.

It's amazing how long it takes Windows 7 to do custom searches.

I never noticed it being slow... I generally have a vague idea where the file and don't have to search the whole drive.

Same here, but I directed Windows 7 to that particular partition, and it never finished searching before I cut it short. The green progress line gets slower & slower as it nears the end. I've seen this happen more than once.

I have the same file on XP, and it found it in no time, and I don't even have indexing enabled on the aging OS.

    Thanks, Whiskeyman.

In the meantime, I installed a program called Everything. The program will not search file contents, however. Only titles.

    Got rid of it.

I'm now using Copernic desktop search, version 3.4.0.0026, with unlimited file indexing. (the latest free versions of Copernic put a cap on indexed files at 75,000)

Secunia says my version is secure, so I will use it in conjunction with Windows 7 built-in search for the time being. I can't seem to find a download link for my version of Copernic to share with you all. :(

    Hi James ...

You might also want to give File Locator Lite, the freeware version of File Locator Pro, a try. I've been using it for years, ever since it was called Agent Ransack, and it more than meets my needs. I never even use Win7's built-in search function.

Thanks, JSS. I'll take a look at it.
