Which browser are you using? Often times you can change the standard download folder to any folder.

And you're really not getting an error message are you? You probably meant the issue or situation stared today.

Did you make note of the name of the file you're downloading so that you can search your hard drive for it?

Have you tried changing the download location? (the desktop would be a good place)

Yes a copied the Download icon to the desktop, this shows to be empty. Checking the main download setting shows files that have been downloaded.

In Internet Explorer, click the gear icon near the top right corner, and select View Downloads. Down at the bottom left of that window, click Options and then click the Browse button. The folder you now see is where you currently have IE setup to download files into. You can change it by browsing around in there and selecting any other available folder on your computer.

I've never copied a download folder to a new location by itself.

Try Doc's advice and see what happens.

Thank you for latest suggestions. I carried out steps, now notice that I have a Download Icon on my Desktop. I will try a download of a file later and let you
    know of outcome. Thank you.

Downloads now appears in PCs name/downloads, downloads are shown, but Download icon on Desktop shows as empty. Carrying out suggestion again now show a blank and browser fails to open.
