I installed the fix, so we'll see what happens on patch day.

Thank God I have Windows 7 now.

    Hi guys

Just to keep you posted on some the points raised or suggested so far.

    1. Reason why xpw.sp3 is maintained is due to legacy issue on one program.
    2. Installation a specific IE8 update as per Dr latest reply; once browser tries to communicate with service, svchost hogs.
    3. Hogging cause all sorts of huge delay in all other activities, not only installation or removal of office02, so it is not a office02 issue.
    4. Walking away from the updating process for hours did nothing as the checking for updates shows zero results; the only result is the hogging.
    5. Using firefox to do ms Updates also end up with hogging.

So i will rest this matter and approach another way when i have the time. Meanwhile xpwin.sp3 works is running without hogging if i don't do ms updates.

    Thanks much, Doc!

svchost.exe did not max out this time after I installed your posted fix. I went to Microsoft Update and installed this month's security patches in just a few minutes. It's bittersweet considering XP will be retired soon, but I am nevertheless grateful that XPs update process is working as it should again.

Fairly sure you can pick up a copy of Windows 7 Pro quite cheaply, and would this not also entitle you to install XP Mode, meaning you can run this troublesome program (In a virtual environment), and also not have to deal with XP's annoyances?

More info. On XP Mode here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7
