Has this been a drag on your browser, Whiskeyman?

    Is it similar to WinPatrol?

It isn't just changing to Win 7 or 8 or 8.1, it's the fact that I will need a whole new computer, drives, monitor - the whole works. This system is about 8 years old as are many of the programs on it. Upgrading the programs will cost as much as the new computer.

I just had my other system replaced but I put XP back on it till I get the programs figured out.

I will have to do something soon as this thing is getting too slow for some of the work I do.

I've heard conflicting reports on 7, 8, and 8.1 (is this real). I'm looking for suggestions while trying to figure out what I need in hardware. Also heard there will be a completely new system out by 2015.

I am keeping my Dell Dimension 9150 with Panda Cloud Antivirus and Sygate Personal Firewall running. Wouldn't give you any amount of money to change. LOVE MY XP!

Got a friend who bought his first PC with Win98. He then went to XP and now Win 8 and is using his original XP monitor. What drives are you talking about?

OK, can still use the monitor. I just checked and I built this system in March of 04. My disc drives are as old as the computer and most new boards today use sata connections. My board and cpu will not work with win 8, according to ms website. I do have a couple of ide to sata adapters in my other system, but those drives are a lot newer. Some of my programs also are not suited for win 8 and they are old enough to not have any updates available. I have this thing about buying new stuff when the old stuff is still working, but I can probably make more money with the new stuff. I don't buy new phones every year either. Call me cheap.

A problem I'm finding is that several of the programs I have used for years, which regularly update themselves, have quit working. In particular, print.net (a photo editing program) and Google Earth will start and do the basics, but then functions deeper into the program don't work.

In Google Earth, the displayed data consist only of a pale blue ground plane, darker blue ocean and major roads - no buildings, no other detail.

In print.net, I can display a photo from a folder, but can't do any editing, which is a nuisance because many photos we get from family are 6" x 4.5 ", and my photo printer can only do 4" x 6 ". This means DW can't take photos of grand-daughter (2 yrs old and living in Japan) to show friends.

Maybe I'll have to bite the bullet and put Win7 on this old computer.
