    Hi all,

As the subject says, There's 2 in Control Panel. How do I get rid of the second one?

One is probably WIFI and the other is from a cable. It doesn't hurt anything.

Try this. Click on "Change adapter settings" on the left hand side. On the next screen you can select and delete the connections you see.

    Are they both 'active' connections?

MrBill, there is no such option in XP! I have 3 comps running XP and one has the same problem as jpChris.
It shows a Network connection with a RED X in it. I haven't worried about until this Post.
What I see in Device Manager > Network Adapters > 3Com Ethernet Controller & NVIDIA Networking Controller.
In Control Panel > Network Connections > I have Local Area Connection 2 (3Com) & Local Area Connection 4 (NVIDIA) with X in it.
I'm going to investigate in BIOS and will report back later. Neil.

I stumbled on this link from Microsoft to "Fix It ":

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

I'm waiting for my friend to call to test this out. That is if he can get on the web in Safe Mode with Networking.

In Network and Sharing Center. But as retiredlearner says, it doesn't show in XP.

I don't have an XP PC working at the moment, but I know it can be done. Been awhile and don't remember what I did. Done it on the grandkids laptops when they brought them here to be done. I always hook up wired as it is faster to do things on the net. Then dump my stuff and let them take them home.

Hi jpChris, go to BIOS > Advanced > Integrated Peripherals > Onboard Lan > Disable the one that has the RED X in it in Network Connections > F10 out and your done.
When your comp restarts > Control Panel > Network Connections > and it's gone. ;)
Just fixed mine as above. :D Neil.

Thank you, Neil. I've written it down and will have my friend attempt it.

You have two NICs installed.. Probably one wireless and the other is ethernet. Although two ethernet's is not out of the question. Right click one in network connections, left click on disable and it should disappear. If not clear the check box for the one you don't want appearing in the network properties "show icon in notification area "

When I click on either one, it shows only one connection, not two,

Than if you click on EITHER ONE tells me that you have TWO. Did you RIGHT click and tell it not to show?

Hi elcajongunsfan, It doesn't "Remove" the Network Icon in >Control Panel > Network connections if you Right click on it - there is NO Delete option - you can only Disable it.
Going into BIOS and doing the Disable in there - removed the Icon in Network Connections.
I've just rechecked in my XP comp before this Post.

jp Chris and MrBill please read my Post regarding the procedure I followed. It worked for me.
I had 2 entries in BIOS and Disabled the one that had the RED X on it in Network Connections. My comp still gets on the Internet OK, but the Icon in Network Connection is gone. Neil.

Well, I'm looking at my laptop, it has a wireless and an ethernet connection. The ethernet I use occassionally when using Tera Term to console into Cisco gear. So anyway, I just right click on it and clicked disable and it disappears from the notification area. If he has only one NIC and he's seeing two connections then yeah your solution is correct. Generally speaking, one has an onboard NIC then another for wireless, and maybe another because of an expansion board plugged into an ISA/PCI slot.

Let me step away from this thread--I obviously read it wrong

Hi elcajongunsfan, There must be variations in OS's. But jpChris was dealing with XP SP3 system and as I stated - I had the identical problem but hadn't worried about it till the Thread started me investigating.
My XP comp doesn't have a card- it's built in to the m/b. Don't ask me how/why I had both 3COM & NVIDIA controllers showing in BIOS, but doing what I did fixed it
If it hadn't worked, I would still be able to enable it again through BIOS settings.
You're input is welcome at any time. Cheers Neil.

OK, I had him go into the BIOS and there's no "Onboard Lan" in the BIOS.

    What now?

Hi jpchris, What Brand of motherboard is installed in the comp?
Both my XP comps have Asus. One ATX and the other Micro ATX. Phoenix-Award BIOS in the ATX. This one shows:
    Onboard AC97 Audio Controller
    Onboard AC97 Modem Controller
    Onboard Lan (nVIDIA)
    Onboard Lan (3COM)
    Onboard 1394 Device
    Onboard Serial Port 1
    Onboard Serial Port 2
    Onboard Prarallel Port
    Onboard Game Port
    Onboard MIDI I/O
    Onboard MIDI IRQ

Award BIOS in the Micro ATX. This one shows Onboard Video Memory and Onboard Lan

If there is no Lan showing - there must be a card installed? Neil.
