    Hi all,

I installed SP3 on my friends computer and while everything else seems to be trouble free, I can't connect to the web. I've checked all the settings, but no joy.

How do I fix this, please.

A few things right off the bat:

    A) click on your start button , click on run , and type in "cmd" without the quotes and hit enter.

type "ipconfig" (without quotes) and hit enter. what is the IPv4 ip address, the subnet mask, and the default gateway address? (default gateway is your router ip address and thus the gateway to your internet)

    B) type "ping 127.0.0.1" (without quotes again) and hit enter..this checks your TCP/IP software stack and verifies it is working (your result after you hit enter should be "reply 127.0.0.1 blah blah blah 4 times)

    C) type "ping your_ip_address and hit enter. the "your ip address" is the result from ipconfig test in A). For example if your are using a router and it is set for NAT (network address translation) a typical IP address could be 192.168.1.100 Pinging your own IP address tests your NIC (network interface card) for functionality

    D) type "ping yahoo.com" and hit enter. what do you see?

Your NIC and tcp/ip stack are good. you are not connected to the internet. you aren't reaching your router. Windows is assigning an iP address because it can't find a dhcp sever to give it one.. Check your router. If using a cable modem, reboot it and your computer. check the cabling from your NIC to the router/ modem

Also do this: At the command line type in ipconfig/ release hit enter then ipconfig /renew hit enter

    Hi elcajongunsfan,

Well, still no joy. I did everything you suggested (including rebooting & switching the cable to a new one). I spent over an hour on the phone with ATT and everything is up to snuff. It shows that the computer is connected, the speed, status, et al, is just lovely: There's no problems with the DSL modem.

Since I just installed SP3, do you think that something is wonky there?

    I appreciate the help.

Install the ethernet drivers for the network card.

Do as TonyT suggests and install nic drivers. verify that you see your network icon (two little computers) in the taskbar in the lower right hand part of the screen. Right click on that puppy. Left click on network connections. You will see your NIC card and it will say words to the effect of 'local connection, firewalled etc etc. Right click on it, left click on "properties" left click on "Internet Protocol TCP/IP' Left click on properties. Make sure "obtain ip address automatically" is filled in" Make sure obtain DNS server ip address radio button is fillled in also. Left click OK, and left click oK again.

And for jokes, I'd say take a laptop and connect it to your modem to rule out any layer 1 issues and verify it's just your computer alone thats acting up.

I'll be hanging out all day watching the Chargers getting their butt kicked by the Chiefs if you have any other questions

    Good luck

I have AT&T, too, and I have had your problem a few times myself. Usually, my problem was related to an incorrect network password, but I'm sure AT&T checked that out for you?

    Hi all,

Reinstalled drivers (again), the Network icon is there in the systray (with a little dot moving back and forth), my computer is accessing the web just fine "” but this one isn't. However, I can get online in Safe Mode w\Networking.

    I'm stumped.

I'm out of solutions. Maybe a malware issue?

Lastly, check for the existence of your NIC in device manager. right click on my computer, left click on properties, and go to hardware devices. Look for your network adapter.. You might delete it, restart and then your computer will reinstall the NIC. Have your drivers ready

    Sorry I couldn't help

    Good luck

Sounds like a driver / service issue, or it could very well be a malware issue as elcajon suggested.

I guess you've done malware scans already?

    @ Neil,

I went to that site already and tried everything — no joy.

I've done all the scans (all came up clean), reinstalled the ethernet drivers (and other drivers), called AT&T again, and it still won't get on the web unless I'm in Safe Mode with Networking.

One idea was to uninstall SP3 and go back to SP2. I'll try to reinstall SP3 and if no joy, then back to SP2: Unless someone can think of something.

    sfc /scannow

I tried that after I had trouble with SP3, and I think it helped.

Hi jpChris, Did you scroll down through the link and read and follow ALL the suggestions?

Did you see the bit about MS KB953979. This is a Download from MS to fix the problem.

It's about 3 Posts off the bottom of the page. Neil.

I've done it all. A Google Search came up with 1.8 million "hits ". Everything is setup correctly and the MSKB article didn't help.

So, I decided to uninstall SP3 and a whole boatload of errors happened: No user account anymore; DecodePointer kernel32 errors; SHRegGetValueW errors; no system restore points; Video Controller and on and on. I've reinstalled the MoBo drivers, and the Monitor drivers, sfc /scannow (which took about two hours), all to no avail.

    What now?
p.s. I can't even do a Repair! I get a weird screen that says C:\ and below that it says "press enter to quit ". I can't type anything more than C at that prompt — only one character can be typed in; and when I do, I get the same screen back. The up\down arrows don't work!

I was hoping you would have been a little bit more patient and checked Barbara-Ann's suggestion and my malware suggestion. Another thing could have been a badly behaving anti virus program causing the internet issue. i have seen that with Zone Alarm.
The c;/ is the same thing as your cmd screen aka dos box..

Clearly, the uninstall was a mistake... Time to bust out your install disk and give your machine a fresh install.. Partition it and install.. fact, get a new HD instead of using the old one-----0r do a Linux install

Agreed. Although it hope it goes better than my XP reinstall experience...
