You have clicked on the Sound Icon in the SysTray and made sure that "Mute" isn't checked? And made sure that all the plugs are plugged in? Even if it looks OK, pull it out and push it in a few times.

Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Make sure Mute is not checked.
You can test sound set up from there. Neil.

Hi cbumpkin. You might also try updating the driver for your audio device and see if that solves the problem. What audio device does your computer have?

In Device Manager, remove the sound. Then reboot your computer and see if Windows will now install the driver automatically. Or in Device Manager have window try to update the driver. Allow it to go on line.

If you double click on the sound device in device manager what is the name of the audio device?

Why are you going to give up so easily?

Run this tool and post the information in your next reply so I can see the specifications of your machine.

Evan, Quote[I am a 87 year old man, almost computer illeriate, I don't know the meaning of most of the abbrevations I find].
I can understand - at that age, fear and terror of the unknown take over.
Usually this problem was associated with a MS Update that wiped the sound and the icon. F8 > Last known good config > may have fixed it or even a Restore to a time prior - but he obviously would be out of his depth.

My sincere wish is that the (thanks fir trying. iwill carry it to a shop) will do it for free. Neil.

Well done cbumpkin, no offence meant but I have mates older than me who wouldn't dare do anything to their comps.
Have you tried the F8 > last good config as I suggested?

If want to try and find out more about the innards of your comp - Download http://www.filehippo.com/download_speccy/ and this will tell you what you have. Neil.
