Well, removing the notebook didn't work. But, I ended up doing two other things. I went into device manager and under the USB hubs properties for Power Management, I unchecked "Allow this device to wake the computer ". I then did the same for my MS Mouse and Keyboard Wireless receiver - which uses USB too.

Then I went around to the rest of the computer in the house and removed them from the Homegroup. I just got back from the dog taking me for a walk and my system was asleep. :D Surprisingly, pressing the space bar on the keyboard woke it up.

So I will probably join the other computers to the homegroup tomorrow and see what happens. According to what I've been reading (thanks to leads through SWDr's link) adding computers to the homegroup after 8.1 is installed isn't a problem. We'll see.

I'm sorry Bill, I should have been more clear I meant touch screen and mouse driven. I say this for the sake of beginners to this pc environment and I think it would be easier for them to learn this os with the touch ability along with the mouse. We have to think about the simple minded ppl out there. ;)
I did not see much value in Start8 due to the fact that some programs would not start when choosing them so I found it to be limited and removed it. :)

I am afraid that still makes no sense to me.

Now you are suggesting Microsoft should have released W8 as a Windows version that does not support a keyboard. ??? How is that user friendly? How is not having a keyboard better when the QWERTY keyboard has been around for over 100 years, even our grandparents can show little ones where a key is?

Simple minded people? I am not sure what that means, but I suspect some would think it an insult - though I am sure that was not your intent. Since W8 can be configured to accept input from just about any source you want, including voice only, it can accommodate the needs of just about anybody, regardless their skillset or physical abilities.

One of the greatest assets of W8 is its flexibility, and you want to restrict that. That would be a costly mistake.

I stand by what I said earlier. W8 works great without a touchscreen. But it also works with a touch screen only, or touchscreen and mouse. Or with touchscreen, mouse and keyboard. Or without a mouse.

If you think W8 should not have a keyboard - don't connect one! Now that's simple.

Plus, as noted earlier, having separate versions places a huge demand on development resources. Plus a huge demand on distribution, storage, inventory, marketing, tech support, and even extra shelf space at the retail outlets. All that would, no doubt, result in higher costs for all of us.

I think you are underestimating the learning power of humans. Especially since the vast majority of us (at least those younger than me) have used computers since an early age in school, and have used touch screens at ATMs and check out counters, and with PDAs and cell phones for nearly as long.

I also agree with Pete about Start8. I don't see what Start8 has to do programs not starting. I have not encountered a single program that would not start with Start8 - and I've been using it for several months now.

 Wow... Just wow... Might need to clarify that... Just for the 'simple minded' people out there (me inclusive) ;)

Just because it didn't work for you does not mean that the program does not have value, the program that you found to be 'limited' I and I'm sure many others have found absolutely sterling.

I played with several Start menu utilities, and IMO, the best by far is Start8. It accurately recreated the most used desktop feature billions of users depend on every day: the Windows Start menu.

Parallels Desktop for Mac is the No. 1-selling Mac software that lets users seamlessly run Windows on a Mac without rebooting. They bundle both Start8 and ModernMix from Stardock with every copy of Parallels Desktop 9.

To the Windows Start menu (which I contend includes the Start orb/button) I must add the Windows Desktop - which I note 8.1 now provides the option too boot straight to.

Hmmm, I just noticed WEI (Windows Experience Index) went away with 8.1 too (though I remember someone saying that with the preview version).

I don't see that as a bad thing since it really was not a good benchmarking program anyway, and gave many more grief than it was worth - especially when comparing it to other computers. But I kinda liked running it when I updated my hardware to see where I stood compared to before the update.

Oh well. It is available via a command line, however, by running winsat /formal.
