I'm doing a setup for first use on my Acer Veriton and am offered Windows XP mode in the additional software options. I've noticed in these forums that some have had difficulties of one kind or another in their experience of this option. Naturally I want to do what's best for my new computer experience and don't want to install something which might not be of any real benefit or use to me.

My previous OS was WXP so I would be happy to have it provided it wasn't going to be a source of hassle. I'd appreciate any thoughts on this matter.

    Thank you. :)

I have been running XP mode ever since Win 7 was released in order to run a couple of programs which are incompatible with 7 without issue. Use it once a week at least - Accounts Quicken 2000.

Thanks, Pete. I wouldn't be using it for anything of a business nature. Would that be its main purpose?

You use it when you have an application or something that won't run in Win 7.

How do you install a non-compliant program on Windows 7? Can it be installed in XP mode (is there such an option?)?

First try running the installation .exe in Compatibility mode - right click on .exe > Properties > Compatibility.

If that does not work you can use XP Mode providing that you are running Pro or higher.

In XP Mode XP runs in a Virtual Machine - a computer within a computer and runs as if it were a standalone OS, but with contact to the host machine for data access, etc. Software can be run and installed as if it were a standalone PC.

XP mode & MS Virtual Machine are free downloads from MS and include a copy of XP Pro - Google for more info.

If you are running 7 Home you can still run XP in a Virtual Machine such as VirtualBox which is free, but in this case you need an unactivated copy of XP

XP Mode was dropped from Windows 8 but I am running XP in VirtualBox without issues on my 8.1 laptop.

Pictures worth a 1000 words... You should be able to see my Win 7 START button and the XP Start button.

Good question. I was wondering the same thing myself.

Haven't noticed any impact - after you only run it 'on demand' as you would Office, Photoshop, etc.

I see that you can install it later on if you wish. I'll choose that option and see if I have any need for it in the meantime.

Thanks for all the input, folks. :)
