Can Win 8.1 Pro Preview be uninstalled? Or should I wipe the drive and start over?

That's terribly short sighted on part of MS. Win 8 is not selling great & on top of that they have this ridiculous & stupid limitation.

Now some problems have been reported while updating:

    Windows 8.1 update woes

If I use the link I was sent will get Win 8.1 Pro and which product key do you use the product key that came with OS disk or one with the iso download.

It would probably be best just to wait until it is offered via Windows Update.

It seems clear to me MS is trying to prevent piracy and rampant distribution of unauthorized copies, and I don't blame them for that. Pirated software is often infested with malware and it is typical for Microsoft to get unjustly blamed for security issues they did not cause.

But I agree, they need to come up with a better plan. While I shudder to think there are still folks on dial-up, but there certainly are many on slow broadband connections, or connect via pay-as-you-go (that is, they pay per Gb of bandwidth used) services. If they have multiple systems in need of updating, they have to pay their ISP for each download - not cool.

Is it going to offered as an update. I know that mine is legal. I ordered it from a reputable Business. This isn't the first time I have ordered from them also got it for a great price.

Happy to report clicked on the link MS sent me. Just let it run from within the Store and Win 8.1 Pro installed without a hitch.

Ah! That's good news. I have one minor problem that is annoying me and that is my system now refuses to go to sleep after installing 8.1. It worked perfectly before. I will hopefully sort that out soon.

Hmmm, well, it runs, reports 10 errors, 3 warnings, and 30 informational, creates the energy-report.html file, but when I try to open the file, I get a file not found (with IE, FF, and Chrome). Really odd because AFAIK, everything else works fine. I can manually put the system to sleep no problem. So I have some more digging to do. Thanks for that link, will check out those suggestions. Stay tuned.

Well, this is interesting. I could not open it with any browser. Word could not find it even though I had it set "all files ". FoxIt would not open it saying it could not open the Word document. ??? So I sent it to the printer and suddenly it spit out the 7 page report. ??? All errors point to USB stuff - USB root hub, Generic USB Hub, USB input device, and USB Mouse and Keyboard Detection. So will start by looking there. Odd since it worked great with 8.0.

Did you try going into power options? On the left side of the screen click on choose what the power buttons do. At the very bottom of the screen there are shutdown options sleep was not checked. Mine were greyed but at the top of the screen is an option to Change settings that are unavailable.

Yeah, power options was the first place I checked as traditionally - going back to Windows 3 (it seems Windows sleep mode has never worked well consistently) - changing the timing settings and changing them back again would always fix it for a few months, until they broke again - that is, if a simple reboot didn't clear the problem. I suspect since they changed how Windows shuts down (or should I say, doesn't completely shutdown anymore) so it can boot faster has something to do with this.

Note my power buttons are not a problem. As I noted above, manually putting it in sleep mode works fine - whether I press the sleep button on the case front (momentarily press the power button vs holding it down) or through the on-screen power button.

It seems this problem with 8.1 in particular is getting more and more attention and appears to be fairly wide spread. So I suspect Microsoft or someone else will come up with a fix soon.

One thing I noticed was under Computer my W7 notebook's Media Center was listed under other Networked devices (even though my notebook has been in sleep mode for a couple days). I removed that am hoping that might have been it - but I need to walk away from my computer for awhile to test it. As it is almost noon here in Nebraska, I think a big breakfast/brunch is sounding pretty good about now. ;)
