My Inspiron 2300 All-In-One gives me internet access via the hard wire Ethernet port but not wireless. Diagnose tells me the wireless service is not running. It must be this PC because my wireless laptop can make wireless connections.

Tried starting WLAN AutoConfig in Services but that didn't work. Got message "Windows could not start the WLAN AutoConfig service on the local computer. Error 3. The system could not find the path specified. "

Device manager indicates the device ( Dell Wireless 1703 802.11b/g/n 2.4Ghz) is working properly.

Where else should I be looking or is this a hardware problem?

Problem was driving me crazy so I again went to 'Services' and checked everything that appeared to be related to wireless. Turns out that by checking WWAN AutoConfig Properties/Dependencies and starting dependencies that were not running, wireless is again running. I now have all set to run automatically.

Hi buzzmag, My Internet connection for my comp is through a NetComm ADSL2 Wireless Modem Router. It is connected by cable between the computer and the Modem/Router.
My Notebook and my Smartphones all connect to the Wireless for Internet, but nothing will work if I disconnect the Ethernet cable.
You will need a Special Wireless Internet unit to operate without a fixed Landline as I understand it.
Someone with more knowledge on the subject may check in. Neil.

    This is not true.
It may be true that your setup works like that, but to use wifi all one needs is a modem/wifi router combo or separate modem & wifi router.

Wires have nothing to do with wifi except when using a separate modem & wifi router, the modem connects to the wifi router by wire.

If your setup requires your computer to be connected by wire to the router in order for wifi to work for others, then it's definitely misconfigured.

Tony, after my Post last evening it made think. My desktop comp and my HP Notebook both connect wirelessly with my HP 2540 printer.
I use a wireless mouse on the comp.
Do I need a wireless adapter to connect to my router without the ethernet cable? Neil.

The Notebook connects to the router & printer wirelessly.

Your desktop connects to the router by wire and connects to the printer by wire. The printer connects to the router wirelessly, but your connection to the printer goes via wire to router to printer.

    Desktop------wire------router******wifi signal******printer

    Laptop******wifi signal******router******wifi signal******printer

Wifi mice and keyboards have nothing to do with wifi networking, different technologies.

Yes, to connect desktop to router by wife the desktop needs a wifi adapter.

Thanks Tony that verifies what I had assumed was happening.
I'm awaiting arrival of a 300Mps USB adapter and that will be one less cable clutter. Neil.

It would be funnier if you knew how the Brits pronounce Router! Neil.

You'd be surprised at what a wife can do when she puts pressure upon a husband! She can send a lot of info wirelessly with just a look.

Ha! Dear me... I hope no one's gone off to cancel their broadband packages, after resolving to just using their 'other half' for connectivity. ;)

Anyone married over 20 years will tell you that there's not enough connectivity with the 'other half'.

Been married 48 years so I think I can say that connectivity weakens as the years go by, but the messages get received OK. :D
Back to the good stuff. I've just installed the Adapter and Drivers and she's all OK.
Anyone need an Ethernet cable? Neil.
