I am about to quit doing Windows updates on three Win 7 Home Premium machines. I believe that in March 2013, an update deleted or hid my printer on three machines. I could not get the printer back. I could not re-install. This problem was all over the internet. All sorts of printers, all sorts of computers. Microsoft would not "own" this problem, no printer manufacture seemed to care. There was no resolution.

Also, on these three machines, getting updates to install has become problematic. On two of them, updates would not install. On the third, I got no updates for three months. I have tried the various Microsoft MrFixit's, to no avail. I have called the 800 number for security problems and gotten no help.

To date, I have had none of these problems on three Win 7 Professional machines. But, rather than run into this thing again, I will simply quit updates.

In my view, and, from what I read, in the view of many, the whole Windows Update process is broken. Many updates create problems, many need to be pulled back by Microsoft and re-issued. These things need to be fully tested before they are sent out into the world.

I am aware that I may be leaving my machines open to some sort of heist. But, I am behind a hardware firewall, a software firewall, and heavy password protection.

If anyone has any solution to the printer problem. and or the update problems, I would love to hear back from you to help keep me from this dangerous act of defiance.

While there might be some problems, I've not seen any "all over the internet" as you claim.

You've never asked for help here, so what do you want me to say?

That's just BS. Yes, on occasion there will be problems, but for >99% of users things are fine. The point is that 1% of Windows 7 users would make up around 4 million in numbers. You can say that's the view of many, I'd say even 1% is the view of a tiny minority.

Disabling Windows Update is not the answer, and a firewall won't keep you save if there's a vulnerability in Windows that can be exploited remotely.

You should start a thread about it.

Got to agree with Aire here on all his points.

3 machines having the same problem does seem strange. Makes me think that something you installed or a driveby was put on those machines that is causing the problem.

Is one of the machines where you don't have much on it where you could start over and don't put anything on it other than security programs that you may be using. What programs are you running for security purposes?

Richard, judging by you most recent threads, I'd say that you have an infection of some sort on these machines, or you may possibly be looking at a complete reinstall of the operating systems.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I feel your installation(s) of Windows 7 is / are compromised.

There are other things that can be run that what you have posted won't pick up. Head to the Malware section and do one of the problem machines. Broni is good at what he does there.
