Yes, I left that out by accident. It's a great way to see what's going on.

Ok. I am not a paid member but do receive their news letters.

Next question, why did you post a link to something that we can't see?

You see only the free content - there is more.
I posted a link to the source, NOT to the relevant article which is only available to those who subscribe - the amount is up to the subscriber.

"From small acorns giant oak trees grow" I don't know who quoted this but it suits this occasion, I started with a small HD running light and now have the answers to what many of you do to check/or not if the hd is running.
The computer I am working on is usually on my desk but I intend to stand it up, (it is designed to do either) under the desk, I will be able to see the light as I pass my computer room and see if the HD is still running.
    Marking this Resolved.
    Thanks everyone for interesting responses.

That's great, but just remember, it does not really tell you anything other than the system is powered on - and the power light does that already. Again, when you, the user, go idle, Windows and "background" programs and features step forward and become active.

Sure, unattended drive activity can be due to malware activity, so you just need to make sure your system is fully updated, you have a decent anti-malware solution in place, and you avoid risky behavior - the things you need to do regardless if watching the drive activity light, or not.
