I setup a MS account using my gmail address (which I read was more secure than Hotmail or Live mail) when I first setup Win8 but later switched to a local account because I didn't want to login every time. I am using a desktop and no one else uses my machine.
I've read much about the MS account and would be interested to know your opinions on the pros/cons of using a MS account in Win 8 vs using a local account. Thank you.

I use a local account because I've absolutely no use for any Windows 8 apps. In fact, I uninstalled all the stock apps.

    Here's Microsoft's explanation.

I'm using a Microsoft account on my laptop, just because, but I personally prefer the local account & separate passwords for anything else I may use (Skype, SkyDrive etc.).

Central storage also means if that account gets compromised, they have access to anything connected to it (i.e. your Skype, your SkyDrive etc.)

good point. Are you using it on your laptop for security...course local acct can do that too. So what's the rationale for using it on your laptop. just curious. thanks.

Because I need to know.... I only use my laptop for testing (and as my main system if I travel).

I know this thread is resolved but by running netplwiz and unchecking "Users need to enter a username and password to log in" You can skip the lock screen entirely and use a MS account without having to sign in. This applies to Windows 8 Pro, I am unsure for just plain Windows 8

It has some nice extra features thrown in like Hyper-V and Group Policy but if you used Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows XP Home Edition before then you should be fine with regular Windows 8

I have the standalone Skype on Windows 8, it runs on the Desktop & not the Metro page.
