I am running a desktop with Windows 7 home premium. I keep getting the notification that updates are available so I click on "check for updates ". It then says to download the latest update program. It never completes. I get and error code 80073712. I need to update to sp1...any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Hi geno,

See this Microsoft page. It says that it applies to Vista, but it should also work for Win7.

If that doesn't work, google "error code 80073712 in win7" for other suggestions.

I did the install of sp1 and got this error:
    ERROR_SXS_TRANSACTION_CLOSURE_INCOMPLETE_(Ox8007371b)
I ran the troubleshooter for windows update and tried to update with same results.
I also ran the system update readiness tool
I am running Windows Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. I am going to disable them and try again...

That error code comes up with nothing. Is there more to it?

Look at your windows update history and see when this update first failed to install. then look at system restore and try rolling back to just before that failed update. the update again, but on update list uncheck some of the updates and install a few at a time.

I have been out of town for the past week...I looked at the history and the only one showing fail was an office 2007 security update several times. The sp1 doesn't even show up.

    Do this:

    • Click Start, and in the Search programs and files box on the start menu, type CMD, then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter (this will get you an elevation prompt for an Administrator command prompt).
    • At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, then press Enter.
    • Next type cat /dev/null > %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log then press Enter (ignore the error that 'cat' isn't recognised... it still does what it is supposed to do).
    • Lastly type net start wuauserv, then press Enter.
    • Now repeat the action that normally leads to the Windows Update error.
    • Once completed, enter %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log in the Search programs and files box on the start menu and copy/paste the contents of the file in your next post.

I followed the link and copy/pasted in cmd all of the dll files in the manual fix. Many of them could not be found or wouldn't open...I just gave up after working on it about an hour.
