IMHO, Win 8 is not a flop, but it is not a good reason to upgrade from XP or 7. It's almost like Vista was, in that people tried it and wondered why Microsoft would do something so silly.

Then MS repackaged Vista and Voila! Windows 7! A very solid OS.

Now they have the same challenge with Windows 8 and Voila! Win 8.1 will try to cover their mistakes.

Windows 8 can be very good, given the right amount of resources - 2 GB RAM is not enough - so MS has to correct their mistake.

I'd bet that 8.1 will do the trick.

    But ... I've been wrong before ...

    Cheers!

Pardon my ignorance, but is 8.1 a free upgrade?

It is. Its also a "Service Pack" with MS dropping Service Pack & renaming the whole thing to 8.1 as people are afraid of "8 ".

I was thinking along those lines, but I was not sure.

Kind of like SP2 for XP I guess.

My soap box slipped out when I wasn't looking

Whomever it is at Microsoft that is driving the Windows development and nomenclature, should monitor sites like this one. It might give them pause and possibly a new methodology for development and naming.

I've found more knowledgeable people lurking and responding here than in most fora (really ... plural of forum) and more on-the-nose responses to tech queries.

Many years ago, beta testers at Microsoft were asked to join a group called Club Win. For the short time it existed, I was a member, (even though Groucho said he'd never join any group that would have him as a member, and I agreed with Groucho).

Had it continued, it might have grown up to be like WindowsBBS in the depth of knowledge here.

And let's face it, Microsoft really needs some outside influences to get it back on track. Like, developing a solid OS the first time, and not having to change names, or approach, to fix what they should have gotten right.

But then, that's only one person's opinion ...

    Cheers!

Who was the CEO who launch Windows Vista?

who is the CEO who launches Windows 8.0000?

One thing I don't understand. How can such a CEO survive? Just by eliminating all the potential career-threateners? Or just because he has the control on the board?

    Somebody, Hold Me back!

The guy that Bill Gates anointed to his throne, who also got rid of any competition and, now that Paul Allen has really nothing to do with Microsoft, is the Large and In Charge CEO ... (I really hate to say his name) ... is the person at the top, who should shoulder all the blame for Microsoft's developmental directions and other release shortcomings.

Okay, Ballmer! There, I said it! He does not have the same (pardon the expression) look and feel of a tinkerer, a techie, but more of a corporate thug.

Now, maybe there is/was a reason to have him running some operations, but certainly not the most creative ones, like their namesake OS!

There, my soapbox got loose again!

    Cheers!

Steven Sinofsky took over the Windows division as president in 2009, and led the development of Windows 8. After 23 years at Microsoft, he left on November 12, 2012, two weeks after the launch of Windows 8.

According to reports, there had been growing executive friction between Sinofsky and other top executives at the company.

A number of senior executives have left Microsoft in the past three years.

I'm curious to know why do you keep spam this thread with Linux when the subject is about Windows 8.1 ? I personally think all Linux distro are garbages . I would never use any . Windows is way easier to use over any linux system . I would even use Vista before using any Linux . Only because its easier . Oh yeah , I like 8 to . I have no problems with it , And I did an upgrade from Vista to 8 pro .

Simply because Romanejo mentioned he was checking out Linux distros that were similar to Windows.

    Ok.

    <shrug> Ok.

And even easier yet is not using a computer. ;)

And I suppose that's because it's so much easier to just push big buttons?

I'm a bit surprised it wasn't too much trouble. ;)

    Just... Sterling... :) :D

Whilst I personally believe that TerryFox is entitled as a person, (!) to his own personal (!) viewpoint, I can't understand why, (if he has such a strong aversion to straying from the subject matter) he has further scattered the discussion...
