I leave mine on and also recommend that others do like wise. That is just my opinion.

    I like Post #2.

I also use UAC one click up and WinPatrol. Find neither intrusive - the 'double' layer of protection adds to the comfort zone.

Nothing to be gained by turning it off - possibly everything to lose :)

That's a discussion from 2009, just 2 months after Windows 7's release. Changes have been made & more is known on UAC. As I have stated since:

Running without UAC is asking for trouble

I should add that with UAC turned off any/all programs you run will have the same access to the computer as you do. This includes reading and making changes to protected system areas, your personal data, saved files, and anything else stored on the computer. Programs will also be able to communicate and transfer information to and from anything your computer connects with, including the Internet.

So it sounds like PeteC and myself are on the same page?

I got tired of the dimming feature, so I lowered the bar one notch above off, plus I use WinPatrol, too.

Thanks for updated info. I'll research this in more detail.

Edit: I assume UAC does not apply to FireFox?

It would be nice if there was a way to permanently allow useful programs to bypass UAC.

Remember the Open File - Security Warning in XP? There is a box you can uncheck to stop that warning from ever showing again on selected programs. I'd like to see something like that implemented into UAC. Or is that defeating the purpose of it?

I think it would defeat the purpose. They would be writing **** with names that are real programs and your PC would not know the difference.

This is why on the systems that I configure, I set them to elevate programs without prompting which keeps Protected Mode On for Internet Explorer and you still run programs as a regular user but there is no UAC dialog box. This way you don't completely disable all the security features of UAC and you don't have to worry about seeing the UAC dialog box every time you want to run a program.

See this link, Disable User Account Control(UAC) For Administrators Only.

So, this is more for people that use Internet Explorer? What about FireFox users?

Yes, somewhat. You can still implement this tweak if you can't stand the UAC dialog boxes coming up every time but programs are still run as regular users instead of administrators. This tweak does not affect the security in other Internet browsers.
