These are essential moves. But are they adequate to make Windows 8.x less nasty? I'll wait and see. Not bother to install a "Preview ".

    Ivan,

I agree, and will wait until it is a live release, not a preview. And if the sum total of important revisions includes boot to desktop, a Start Button, etc, then I must wonder whether it's worth the time to update at all.

Does anybody has any idea if 8.1 contains all the patches which MS has published for Win 8 or they have to be installed separately ?

Windows 8.1 got its first patches last Tuesday. So up to the June updates all was included in the current preview.

Is it still recommended to wait for RTM of the SP?

Yes. The current 8.1 is Preview or Beta. The finished version may or may not have changes.

So when MS ships 8.1 to RTM, its fair to believe that all patches before that would be included ?

Can Windows 8/8.1 have multiple user accounts on Surface Pro?

    Which means ...

And, if we have update automatically done to our PCs, we already have those.

So we wait for the Big Upgrade to 8.1 ...

It's like moving to a house without a toilet (W8) and in months move again to another house (now there is a toilet )as an upgrade.

Why do we need to move in the first place? Because we don't own the houses (windows); we just rent (lease) it from the big landlord (Microsoft)!

Why are we excited to move? We just want to live our ways!

And the landlord comes to our house to fix this and fix that, (at our time cost) and the landlord even gives the Big Brother our door keys to enter and put up cameras, CCTV and bugs, recording and watching every email, listening to our every conversations withour our consents or even acknowledgement.

I love my XP, but have one laptop with 7 and the kids find it slow and don't like it (I agree for that and several other reasons). It does such weird things to the touchpad that I cannot find the best adjective to describe my antipathy, and I cannot imagine 8 is any better (agree with "a glorified ipad for a computer and not practical at all "). Hate 8!

I will stay with XP Pro, suffer thru 7, but if backed into a corner on 8 I will convert to Linux (I am checking out flavors and Xubuntu seems pretty modifiable to look/act similar to XP so far) and go into business helping people to convert their computers as well.

Checked out the link. Interesting. Will add that to my list of flavors to consider.

But wait; there's more ... questions.

My (SQOD) silly question of the day is based upon this quote from that site:

"Thanks to Zorin OS's immunity to Windows viruses you will never have to worry about them. "

Does that mean that there are no, as in zero, Linux-based viruses or malware?

Otherwise, it does look very good.

    Cheers!

Thanks, Doc. I forgot to append a tongue-in-cheeky smiley. But the question I wanted to pose is how vulnerable to viruses, created specifically for it - is any Linux OS?

MACs are not usually vulnerable to Windows attacks but are to viruses created to hit specifically MACs. While they are fewer than PCs, they are there and can hit the MAC based computers.

    Thanks, very much,

    Alex

I have been helping a friend transition from XP Home to Windows 8 for the past two weeks. I consider myself to be a fairly proficient and adaptive computer user, but Windows 8 is not for me.

Based on what I have seen, I just yesterday bought a new unit with Windows 7 preinstalled and the Disc and license for Windows 8 included but don't plan, at this time, to ever use the Windows 8 license.

When David Einhorn (hedge fund god) dumped his sizeable 7-year-old investment in Microsoft last week, his comment was:

"Windows 8 appears to be a flop, and a decade of mismanagement has put Microsoft at risk of becoming a shrinking company.

    (Ouch)
