    I have a dream since Windows 98/NT and would like to see if it's now available in Windows 8:

    I want to pair some of the folders on my notebook and my network storage together, in order to minimise files occupying my notebook storage.

    Here's how it should work:
    1. When the notebook and network storage are on the same WiFi, I download a file and it will automatically (with a choice, by default, or my smart rules) stored on the network, or on my notebook.
    2. If the file is on my notebook and not used for a period of time and not time-critical, it will automatically moved to the network.
    3. There should be minimum user-intervention for the storage management of the files downloaded.
    4. Virtually it makes the storage on the notebook a transitional buffer storage and at the same time, I'm not rely on the cloud services (insecure, lack of privacy, constrained by availability of wide area network service, etc.)

    I hate to move files around and do files / storage management manually. I always think it should be the job of an OS.

    Is there any evolution from Windows 98/NT to Windows 8 file system?

    What you are asking for is cloud storage on a lan. This is not the task of an operating system but a task of specialized software/services. Synchronizing files between devices & computer can be done natively, but will often depend on the device, i.e. 3rd party software is required because an operating system cannot natively manage all devices and file systems. What you are asking for is complex file mgmt options and is the task of 3rd party software.

    What type of network storage do you have? Some NAS devices have built in synchronization between itself & a comp.

    Like a hybrid car with gas and electricity compliment each other whenever needed;
    Or recently some NAS with hybrid drive (Flash storage and hard drives) piggyback together.
    You're right that its called cloud now but 15 years ago, I'm working on it already on specific system. Always think it should be a standard OS feature. E.g. Scanned docs in server and freq used and new files on both, then older or less freq doc will be forgotten and refreshed and put back in fast access storage on local machine. Notebook has the computing power now. There's no reason OS not evolve to match.

    I don't like the idea of the operating system, or any software for that matter, moving files to a different location based on "when that file was last accessed ". That means that a process or service must continuously scan files on a drive reading file timestamps. I don't want the operating system to make decisions like that for me.
